I asst'd in a department gun buy back gift cards were given out.
makes me sick what was turned in for a 100 dollar gift card.
COLT PYTHON, KIMBER .45, BERETTA 92, SPECTOR, S&W 19, SEVERAL COLT .38, LOTS OF .22'S, SEVERAL WINCHESTER 1897 'S, LOTS OF MOSSBERG SHOTGUNS, SEVERAL AK47 VARIANTS, SEVERAL MAUSER RIFLES, SKS'S, AND A LOT OF NONFUNCTIONAL JUNK. About 250 weapons were turned no questions asked. What in he,, were these people thinking!:banghead:

ugh.... if only the police would sell them after the buybacks they could make a tone of money

do 2-3 buybacks a year then one big auction if you charge market price for the good guns you could make a good bit of cash for the department

but then again doesnt that defeat the purpose of the buy backs

it seams like they could get an ffl and do it themselves then run the background checks on people if they dont pass because they are a felon (if the nics says why they are turned down i dont know waht it says) then arrest them on the spot

whats a python go for? 650ish?

I wish they'd have that in my area.

I have an old Sears Ranger worth between 50 & 75, it'd be nice to sell it for $100 gift card.

The "Buy Back Weapons" are not the weapons that are used by the thugs. It will not reduce the gun crimes and that is a proven fact. 99% of the guns turned in have been locked away for years and would have never made it to the street. I guess a $100 gift card in hand is better than a gun that will never be used. There are a lot of hard up people out there that are out of work and need food.

What were they thinking?

hmmmmm

"How do I fence this piece I stole from that old dude down the street? I know he didn't call the cops but I got a felony and if I walk into the pawn shop I robbed with it last week they are just going to call the cops..... cops now theres an idea..... I'll sell it to the cops! Get a $100 and get rid of the evidence! Dam but the police are stupid!"

OR

"I ain't seen my babys' daddy in two years. I need some money and he left that gun in the closet. I am just going to take it down there and sell it! I'll get me $100"'

A church had one in Denver recently, but I didn't get a chance to check it out.

I was toying with the idea (as others have suggested) of going down there with the intent of "outbidding" the church for any decent guns. There was a police presence there --but I guess I could prove I'm a legal buyer with my CCW license in hand.

I keep reading about people wanting to do something like this, but has anyone actually gone to one of these things and tried to buy guns from the sellers?

there was a gun buy back that feel through here a while ago. They were offering 50 bucks a gun. I wish it didn't I would have headed down and tried to get me a Kimber .45, Beretta92 or Colt Python for 60 bucks :D in a FTF sale.

I can legally buy a gun from another resident here in Colorado and I have my CCW. They show up, I tell them I'll give them 60 for the gun. They give me the gun. I stick it in my pants and enjoy a very cheap gun. would probably limit it to just a target shooting gun only until I could get it checked out. If it came back that it was used in a murder or other violent crime I'd turn it in at the next gun buy back for a loss of 10 dollars. Worth the gamble in my eyes.

damnit! that Church one in Denver was the one that I wanted to go to. I didn't hear that they finally got their $#!% together and put it on. Their first attempt was at a Martin Luthor King park, which guns were prohibited so the cops who had originally sanctioned the buy back had to stop it hahahahaha

waiting periods do not apply to ftf gun sales in any state that I am aware of in which it is legal to purchase a firearm...

The "Buy Back Weapons" are not the weapons that are used by the thugs.

Not necessarily. Sometimes it's a mother/grandmother that finds a 'street' gun in her son's dresser and just wants to get rid of it.

absolutely right, but then again, sometimes cell phones cause vehicles at gas stations to blow up..... I guess I will do my part to society by relieving everyone of those dangerous and menacing machanical marvels...:neener:

SpecialKalltheway:

I understand they only got 15 guns out of that one. IIRC, one was a halfway decent pump shotgun that looked like it was in good shape.

I wouldn't have minded if I had picked that one up.

But I'm still wondering about the police hassle factor.

Anyone ever actually tried it?

I was thinking of that myself. Does merely "advertising" that you want to buy guns like that put you afoul of any laws? Does it somehow make you a dealer or anything?

Does anyone know?

I googled "gun buyback programs," but couldn't find anything specific about individual, private gun buybacks.

If I held a private gun buy back and advertised it the same way the churches and PD do, could I get in trouble by ATF for being in the business of buying and selling firearms without a license?

If so, why shouldn't the churches and PD be investigated in the same manner?

Use their laws against them.

I don't have today's paper, but I swear I've seen personal ads in the papers "want ads" for guns. Might not be so many of them these days, just for sale ones in this economy.

These gun buy backs prey on the the uneducated. Sure some of the guns that get turned in are dumped there to get rid of evidence or turned in by felons cause they shouldn't have the gun in the first place, but there are plenty that have just been sitting around collecting dust. A lot of those are worth more than 50 or even 100 bucks. These people are duped into thinking that their guns are evil and they only way to get something or them is to sell them ridiculously cheap to the police, when they could legally sell it in a FTF transaction or even sell them at a pawn or gun shop for more money.

+1 to that...seems like someone should intervene... maybe the NRA should host a gun "buy back" auction with backround checks on the guns... that way the people who dont want the guns get rid of them and not get bent over in the process.... seems like a good idea to me....

I was assigned to make sure guns were clear and to zip tie actions open. (#2 Not necessarily. Sometimes it's a mother/grandmother that finds a 'street' gun in her son's dresser and just wants to get rid of it.) This was very true in this case, There were two elderly women in their eighties that brought in two sawed off shotguns in.
