I know there has been several forums on this stuff. I have read at least ten of them and I am just wanting to get an different opinion on certain cleaners instead of just asking what cleaner is best. I want something to clean the barrel and something to oil the gun so that I can set it back and not have to bring it out every so often to coat it again to keep it from rusting... I am leaning on ballistol and breakfree CLP. I have hoppes number nine cleaner as well and it seems to work quite well. So out of these three which should I stick with that you personally find to work the best? I know that some people use hoppes or ballistol and then breakfree to keep it oiled and protected. Others have said that ballistol cleans great and leaves a protective layer over it that makes it easier to clean every time. I don't know how true that is or if this actually makes the gun harder to clean... and again with breakfree CLP I want to know if it's actually a good oiler. I want something that won't evaporate and that will protect my gun the best as possible from rust while not being used. THanks for any advice and help!

I have used Breakfree CLP since it was introduced and have not found anything that will outperform it. And quite a few years of that was spent cleaning competition 1911s that would digest 700 to 1000 rounds in a day. When pulled apart all of these guns were quite filthy but still had lube on the rails and the barrel bushing. Before heading home we would mop the guns generously with CLP while they were still hot and when arriving home the fouling would practically wipe off with a rag. It really does work as well as the maker claims. I used to use CLP to lube and protect and also use a solvent for cleaning. Now I just use CLP for cleaning lubing and protecting. I have also never had any rust at all on guns that were lightly coated with nothing but CLP. For long term storage Breakfree has a product called "Collector" that I have been using on the safe queens. So far they are looking good. Go to Breakfree's website and read about it. The claim is that weapons can be covered with Collector and be free from corrosion for 5 years of storage and be ready to grab and shoot without stripping the Collector off. Pretty amazing stuff. I also use it for tools and cast iron machine surfaces in my shop which can get pretty humind at times and it's been keeping them nice and shiny. An excellent way to apply CLP is with a small paint brush. Just place a couple of drops on the brush or the gun and "paint" it all over with a thin coat. The brush allows you to get the CLP into tiny crevices that you can't get with a rag, screw head slots and checkering and makes it easy to coat the metal right up next to any wood without getting it all over the wood.

I like CLP for what it's good FOR. CLP does seem to protect against corrosion. CLP is a Great light-weight "penetrating oil". Spray a little into the action and it will spread and cover every minute surface very fast AND very thinly. That's good. (it will also leak out of every possible opening--that ok.)
It is not a top notch high friction area lubricant. It won't substitute for heavier lubricants like grease or high quality thicker oils.

There are a lot of very good oils available to fit the friction demand, , temperature variations and even the heat generated by firearms. Oils are refined petroleum products the same as kerosene is. All will "clean" to some extent. Powder residue, copper and lead will need different cleaners than CLP.

Everyone has their favorite lubricants and protectors. I like and use synthetic motor oils, CLP and Militek, all used in certain areas of my "light action" pistols. The Militek is dry & likes high temps, but a good oil could substitute for it. I shoot in a dusty/dirty hot climate These work for ME.

3-in-one oil and WD-40 are not on my go-to list. CLP is not a one product does all.

JMO, YMMV
