well, I have been looking at safes lately, and.... OMG they are expensive!
Soooo, .... I took a look under my stairs at the "catch all" junk closet. Being a carpenter for a living, I have acquired multiple scraps of wood, left over from some custom homes I have worked on. So I emptied out the closet and got started. I ordered a solid core door(80#), some security hinges and double deadbolts, I am reinforcing the jam with extra 2x4's and 5" screws, the interior is fully lined with 3/4" plywood and then 3/4" cedar tongue & groove and I have some Elm & Maple scraps I am going to use for some shelving. The bottom shelf for the gunstocks is cedar that has been routed out and 1/8" cork installed, the barrel rack is maple with sticky back felt.

Looks somewhat similar to what I did, except your racks are much nicer than mine. Wanna make some up for me? :D

Great collection. If it were my house, I would put a heavier lock on the door. Not making it too obvious though, but that's a lot of money sitting in one small room.

Thanks everybody, ColdDay, my solid core door hasn't arrived yet, should be here next weekend I think,
two deadbolts and security hinges are going on that bad boy! I'll post more pic's when complete.
357sig-I'm across the water on the Olympic penninsula, Seattle is easier for others to understand the location.
Tim- pm me if your serious.

Looks good. Any chance you could create false walls as well so if someone gets in they done even see the firearms.

I'm bookmarking this page, I, plan on doing the same to my spare closet, and want to be able to show my contractor. I, can't drive a nail strait, or make a square cut. But my family is full of carpenter's.

in a similar circumstance, a friend built a shallow bookshelf (just paperback depth) in the place of the door. It was really effective, and drew a lot less attention than a deadbolt on a closet door (he *did* have a DB on it, but as it was in the back of a below eye level shelf, it was very unobtrusive)

That looks great. Makes me wish I had stairs with a closet under them! Do you have any plans for firerock, or any other fireproofing measures?

no concrete or fireproofing, but you would need a chainsaw to get through all the wood. I haven't heard of any "cat burgs" packin chain saws yet. But anything's possible I suppose.

What if you left the door you already have and then framed in the solid one you ordered behind it. then there is 2 doors to go through and the first one will hide the interesting double deadbolts on a closet door look.

Out of sight, out of mind is a good thing. I really like hidden areas in houses.

An excellent utilization of space. Nicely done as well. I like the area under the long guns for storage. Keeps them up in case of minor flooding as well. Water heaters and/or pipes do bust from time to time.
