While the AWB and mag ban are likely dead until 2015, the universal background check push is still very much alive, and given that the only bill to propose no recordkeeping (Coburn Amendment) never got a vote and was opposed by Schumer, you can bet keeping records of legal sales is still a high priority in the new legislation they are working on.

Two Senators they are targeting are Sen. Kelly Ayotte of NH and Sen. Mitch McConnell of KY. If you haven't yet, you might want to thank those Senators for their vote (see Activism thread). Additionally, OFA supporters are planning to spend all next week protesting Senators who voted with us.

They are counting on taking control of the narrative while all of us sit back and think the battle is over and we won; but S.649 can come back very quickly now. Please keep the pressure on your legislators and let those who supported us know you appreciate them.

Very true. In addition to staying after your senators, contact your US representative on a regular basis. We don't know what action Speaker of The House Boehner will take in the event the US senate passes S.649. Prior to Boehner, the Republican speaker of the house followed what came to be called the Hastert rule. The Hastert rule holds that "a majority of the majority" must give its consent before a bill can be brought to the floor. The Hastert rule kept us from having an extension of the AWB.

Boehner has abandoned the Hastert rule.

The fight is never going to be over. There will always be statist politicians looking to usurp the people's natural rights.

I think there is a huge problem with the term "gun control." It takes the act of supressing Second Amendment rights and makes it into a fight about owning and using an inanimate object.

Instead, let's start talking about it and calling it what it is - Second Amendment rights supression. Maybe when we start asking people if they are for or against supressing Second Amendment rights - the other side will start thinking about what they are doing differently as it will not be about owning something - but about their belief in the Bill of Rights.

As long as there is wood, there will be termites. As long as there is Liberty, there will be Legion. I believe we will never be truly free of the fight.

Too bad SARS is already taken :p

I try to explain to my liberal and anti acquaintances that doing away with 2A or suppressing it only opens the door for losing other amendments. After 2A most likely the next one would be 4A.

If every gun owner were also an NRA member, this fight would be over.

+1000

Probably 80% of the gun owners I know aren't NRA members. When I ask why, I hear "I really should become a member" or "I've been meaning to do that".

I usually give out gift memberships at Christmas for family members and close friends.

I agree with the whole "gun control" or "anti-firearm" terminology.

I prefer to say "Anti-Second Amendment" or "Citizen Disarmament".

The fight will NEVER be over.

That doesn't mean that the other side is winning or will win in the future.

There are people who'd like to repeal the 13th Amendment. That doesn't mean that I'm going to roll over and pick cotton for free, the way that a number of people here recently have advised gun owners to roll over and "compromise" with those who want to create an absolute governmental monopoly on the means of armed force.

Expanding background checks for gun purchases can still happen, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) told “Fox News Sunday.”

Manchin said he spoke to Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) at Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner and that his partner on the legislation was ready for another try. In a vote earlier this month, the bipartisan amendment failed to get the 60 votes necessary for passage.
“I don’t think he’s done,” Manchin said. ”I was with Pat last night, and Pat’s totally committed to this bill. And I believe that with all my heart. And we’re gonna work this bill.”

The senator told host Chris Wallace that he “absolutely” plans to bring it back to the floor for another vote. ”I truly believe that if we have time to sell the bill and if people will read the bill” it can pass, he said.

We need to be aware of this and keep up the pressure. I can't beleive they are so motivated to pass a law that will not stop criminals using guns in crime.

Getting a federal record of every sale has been the Holy Grail of the gun banners ever since 1968. What they really want is to BAN private sales. This "Universal Background Check" is nothing but a smoke screen to cover it. EVERY transfer of a firearm would HAVE to go through an FFL and a federal record would be created. Before you can force registration and eventual confiscation you HAVE to get on paper WHO owns WHAT. The traitorous Manchin is stabbing gun owners in the back.
This is ABSOLUTELY a back door registration scheme.

As a personal aside, I wish people would STOP using the term gun control. This legislation should be referred to as "anti-gun"

News flash.. The fight will never be over. The liberal fascist will always be at work to limit or remove our 2A rights to "protect Americans and the children". They take the long view and we need to as well.

I was about 8 years old in 1958 when I sent my first little 22 caliber bullet downrange. I am now 63 years old. For 55 years I have watched and participated in the gun control wars. Well a single war of many battles with some lost and some won but the war is forever going on. It always will because like any war there are those who look to new ways and means to usurp the rights and freedoms of others.

As those who oppose us grow old and die off there will always be another group younger to replace them. I am not Michael Bloomberg with unlimited funds to help the war on my side. However, I have the NRA whom I support working to preserve my rights and fight the Michael Bloombergs.

Only a fool would believe this war of rights will ever be over. My life experiences have shown me different. I also don't have much hope for peace in the Middle East but that is another story.

Support those who support your cause!

As most of us know and have said, the war will never be over. Those of us who can must continuously contribute to NRA-ILA. All wars cost lots of money, and our war to preserve the Second Amendment is no different.

This is a generation-long, life-long battle to retain liberties.

Read this article about Sarah Brady if you have any feeling that the vote earlier this month is anything more than a minor battle in a much longer war:

http://politic365.com/2013/04/28/the-speakers-lobby-seen-this-movie-before-on-gun-control/

Milling about near the Senate chamber, Sarah Brady reminded the families from Virginia Tech and Aurora and Newtown to be patient. This was just the start of the race. After all, she waited 13 years between the time her husband was wounded before Congress approved the “Brady Bill.”
