I may be moving in the nearby future to the Lexington, Kentucky area.

Anyone know of good ranges, good gunstores in the area? Also any city/county gun laws of which I need be aware?

Thanks

http://www.kc3.com/index.html is one place to start. KY is an open carry state, and if you want to CC, it is a course, by proper instructor, and wait about 3 months.

I took my course, Mar 4, got first paperwork back, and taken to the sheriff on Mar 24, and am still waiting for my CC permit.

Cost is with course and other fees, about $145 plus ammo.

Sorry to say, I live up northern KY way, and not familiar with Lexington these days.

Kentucky is about the worst state in the country... If you go by what the Brady Campaign says. :D

What is the qualification distance for a CC license? Sorry if I missed that on the web site, seems if it is outside of 50 meters 11 out of 20 hits might be a little challenging.

Also do you have to carry the pistol you qualify with, or is this just a formality?

I'm a KY boy

If you're a gunnut KY is the next best thing to heaven.... Open carry all you want as long as it's not forbidden ( i.e. schools, bars, gov't offices ). Instead of leo's looking @ you funny, they ask you what kind of piece you have. Lexington is only about 15 miles from the internets famous Bud's Gun Shop and indoor range in Paris, Ky.
About the 50 meters qualifying distance, Ive never heard of..... It's 21 feet or 7 yards.....8/10 in the black on a life size shillouette target..... I believe I could have done it w/ a slingshot.... Feel free to p.m. me if you have any more questions......

Qual distance, etc.

I think it was just 7 yd. No weirdness from the Licensing people either.

No, qual gun does not have to be same as carry; no one will ask you to register what you plan to carry.

Lexington is an interesting place. Politically the town is a bastion of Southern Democrats; pretty liberal thinking. You'll get tired of the pretentiousness.
The population is closer than it would like to admit to its' Mt. roots though, so when you're actually with gunny people (and there are a lot) you'll feel at home. Several Gun stores within 1/2 mile of each other in South Lexington. Antique & Modern, Fayette Firearms, Evans, and a new more tacticool place on the North end of town by Hubcap Annies. All of them have different personalities, OK? You'll see what I mean.

Open carry is legal, but I don't see it much; passed a guy in Wally world the other day who was. Some cops cooler than others and hang out in gunshops (Evans, Gun Site). Traffic is becoming murder.

Last I was there, 2 gun shows per year at least; one in Jan and one in Sept.

Closest places to shoot; last I looked, there wasn't a range in Lexington. Check out Buds' Guns, 30 min down the road (Paris); the same as you see mentioned here as an internet seller, Target World in Cincinnatti, and the outdoor (free) range at Cave Run Lake State Park. (TW & CR abt. 90 min).

You will hear about Natural Bridge and the Gorge. Probably the best and closest hiking and camping close to Lexington, But for several years I have not gone there unarmed, and have met many people on the trails that obviously feel the same way.

Cheers, TF

When I took the CCW course, it consisted of a day's lecture/videos wrapped up with a written test (answers given during the day) and a live fire at 7 yards with the firearm of your choice. Scoring was not done, simply his assessment of whether or not you were safe and reasonably competent with the firearm. That was four years ago out here in the "sticks". You may find a different experience in Lexington. Regardless, you'll love the place. Beautiful horse farms, lots to do since it's UK's home.

WOW- I also thank you guys. Im also moving to Ky. In 6 months .
Im so sick of NY state Im outa here.
I can move Anyplace in the state But Hope for the lexington area-Less population In relation to Louisville Less crime .Less Congestion.
Please tell me--TORNADOS,--It seems every week some city or town is getting sucked off the map--Is this true ??
JOBS-Are there Jobs -?
Zoning-Im told some places are free from zoning and the harrassment that goes with it ? [I want to build a log home with no hassells]
In your opinion is the state making money off of traffic tickets? In NY and Ohio they are .
I can only Immagine gun rights Like you have . Count your lucky stars.

30 miles south of lexington on other side of wilmore ky is the bluegrass sportsmens league, have to be a member , but not hard to become one, they have pistol, rifle ,skeet and trap ranges.

just out of curiosity I'm gonna be in harrodsburg visting my parents(just moved to KY I've never been there)
anyone know any ranges around there? or how far it is from Lex?

Wilmore is close to Harrodsburg.

Kentucky sucks, stay away. The grass is too blue, the horses too pretty, the women too fast..

...no wait...

Harrodsburg is close to Lex. South and West of Lexington.

I live outside Louisville. Most of us shoot at our homes around here.

Most people have guns around here and a gun rack with a gun in it isn't uncommon. It is part of life around my area.

So it's legal to shoot on your land in KY (my parents got like 20 acres for their horses) assuming I have a backstop?

I'm from NJ so not used to it just found out a couple days ago they have open carry

As a born and bred Kentuckian, I can attest that it is one of the best states, gun wise, in the nation. And although Louisville and Lexington has their fair share of anti-gun loons (mostly in the editorials of the papers) the majority by far of Kentuckians are pro-gun.

qwert65, yes it is perfectly legal to shoot on your land.

Lexington is also a hop skip and jump from Versailles, home of Centerfire Systems, where you can buy lots of great surplus guns on the cheap!

Knob Ceek, in Bullitt county!

Machine gun range....have shoots 2 times a year...always the 2nd weekend of April and October. (pretty much) we used to go all the time until time and money interfered. they have a web site i do believe....:D

I was just in Kentucky for the NRA convention. Very nice state! I may have to move there! Always wanted to visit Knob Creek, drove right past it while I was there and didn't even know it. Damn!

Legal to shoot on your land

I think that has something to do with the county you're in...I don't know anywhere in Fayette county (Lexington) it would really work, (urban sprawl) but I have been shooting on farms in surrounding counties (Bourbon, Clark, Jessamine) as mentioned above, lots of farm country between Lex and Louisville allowing residents to shoot on property.
I think there's a couple ranges in Louisville, and some cool gunshops too; Kieslers' is just across the river in Indiana.
Cultivate relationships with farmers; many are happy for you to come on their property and indulge in groundhog hunting. They are a particular problem in the area. I have one friend who loves to stalk them with a .22 and shoot them at close range. Others like the long rifle shot. I think my best is 237 yds.
Most gunshops will have info about joining Sportsmens league (Try Evans for sure).
Cheers, TF

whach yourself in the larger heavily populated citys, open carry is legal, but you might get hassled by some rookie cops, the "more expirenced" cops usually dont have problem with it.

if you want a good gunshop,

check our Antique and Modern FIrearms inc. good service, personally know a couple of guys that work there, cool place. i aint a city boy, so hit their website for directions
definately recomend checking them out.

the mall in somerset, and fayett mall (spelled it wrong) has a couple of gunshows now and then, but somerset is a long haul from lexington... buts its just a hour drive from my place

also, you aint a true kentuckian untill you go to the knob creek machinegun shoot.

good luck on building your log home, might look kinda outta place in louisville:D gotta hand em one thing though, them city girls are crazy:cool:

My two cents as a Lexingtonian:

Land in Fayette County is generally going to be expensive, especially if it's horse farm type property. (i.e. rolling green fields.) Woodford County is probably even more so. Scott County, to the north of Fayette County, got expensive once the Toyota factory was built. If you're looking for some wooded property to build a cabin on, hunt and shoot, you will generally find more affordable acreage in places like Franklin County or Owen County. (Both great deer country, by the way.)

+1 on Antique & Modern Firearms. Great selection, nice staff, and I always learn something whenever I visit there. Bud's Gun Shop in Paris is also very nice, and it is such a convenient and beautiful drive between Lexington and Paris that it is no more of a hassle to go there than it is to shop anywhere on Nicholasville Road. (And Bud's is on the outskirts of Paris so you hit it almost immediately upon reaching Paris.)

It is nice to be able to shop directly at Centerfire Systems in Versailles, too. It was even better when they had a lot of ammo for sale but they can't help the current situation.

Blue Grass Sportsmens League is a nice club. It's in Wilmore, which isn't especially convenient to Lexington. Big place, not cheap but lots of facilities:

I also belong to a small club in Frankfort, which is inexpensive and convenient to my workplace. There is a club in Lawrenceburg called Anderson County Sportsman Club‎, but their web page now says that they are nearly at their maximum capacity of 400 members. I suspect they will be all full soon.

There are probably other clubs out there that you can find without too much effort. I think there is a trap & skeet club in Owen County.

As for jobs... what kind of work are you looking for?

There is one extremely important set of laws that you must be aware of in Lexington, KY, one overarching reality that must be acknowledged and celebrated. Keep these things in mind and you should be in good shape.

The Big Blue Rules

1. The Kentucky Wildcats basketball team is the greatest program in college sports history, and Lexington is the center of the basketball universe.

2. You shall not wear the apparel of other college sports teams near Lexington, and for the love of everything that is good, dont EVER, EVER, EVER wear any of that UT convict orange, or that hideous IU red. The wearing, or favorable mention of the programs of, Duke or Louisville will probably expose you to a side of the gun culture that you do not want to see.

3. Midnight Madness IS a state holiday, and March Madness means a month of office work that revolves around the breakroom television, or live broadcasts of the games on the internet. No work should be done during this time. Do not worry about your boss, because he will have taken off to watch the game at home/have tickets to the actual game.

Keep these things in mind and Lexington will be a piece of cake! :D:D:D

In all seriousness, Kentucky is AWESOME, especially as guns go. Interestingly enough, Boston's Gun Bible rates it a 97 out of 100 for state firearms freedom, 37 points ahead of Tennessee. I believe Kentucky was tied for second in that regard. Knob Creek is something special and you HAVE to go see it at least once. Bud's gun shop is great, and so is Whittakers near Owensboro.

Southern Rules
Memo to Visiting Yankees From the Southern Tourism Bureau:

Don't order pasta primavera at Waffle House. It's just a diner. They serve breakfast 24 hours a day. Let them cook something they know. If you confuse them, they'll kick your ass.

Don't laugh at our Southern names (Merleen, Bodie, Ovine, Luther Ray, Tammy Lynn, Darla Beth, Inez, Billy Joe, Sissy, Clovis, etc.). Or we will just HAVE to kick your ass.

Don't order a bottle of pop or a can of soda down here. Down here it's called Coke. Nobody gives a flying damn whether it's Pepsi, RC, Dr. Pepper, 7 Up or whatever-it's still a Coke. Accept it. Doing otherwise can lead to an ass kicking.

We know our heritage. Most of us are more literate than you (e.g., Welty, Williams, Faulkner). We are also better educated and generally a lot nicer. Don't refer to us as a bunch of hillbillies, or we'll kick your ass.

We have plenty of business sense (e.g., Fred Smith of FedEx, Turner Broadcasting, MCI WorldCom, MTV, Netscape). Naturally, we do sometimes, have small lapses in judgment (e.g., Carter, Clinton). We don't care if you think we are dumb. We are not dumb enough to let someone move to our state in order to run for the Senate. If someone tried to do that, we would kick their ass.

Don't laugh at our Civil War monuments. If Lee had listened to Longstreet and flanked Meade at Gettysburg instead of sending Pickett up the middle, you'd be paying taxes to Richmond instead of Washington. If you visit Stone Mountain and complain about the carving, we'll kick your ass.

We are fully aware of how high the humidity is, so shut the hell up. Just spend your money and get the hell out of here, or we'll kick your ass.

Don't order wheat toast at Cracker Barrel. Everyone will instantly know that you're a Yankee. Eat your biscuits like God intended-with gravy. And don't put sugar on your grits, or we'll kick your ass. Don't fake a Southern accent. This will incite a riot, and you will get your ass kicked.

Don't talk about how much better things are at home because we know better. Many of us have visited Northern cesspools like Detroit, Chicago, and DC, and we have the scars to prove it. If you don't like it here, Delta is ready when you are. Move your ass on home before it gets kicked.

Yes, we know how to speak proper English. We talk this way because we don't want to sound like you. We don't care if you don't understand what we are saying. All other Southerners understand what we are saying, and that's all that matters. Now, go away and leave us alone, or we'll kick your ass.
Don't complain that the South is dirty and polluted. None of OUR lakes or rivers have caught fire recently. If you whine about OUR scenic beauty, we'll kick your ass all the way back to Boston Harbor.

Don't ridicule our Southern manners. We say sir and ma'am. We hold doors open for others. We offer our seats to old folks because such things are expected of civilized people. Behave yourselves around our sweet little gray-haired grandmothers or they'll kick some manners into your ass just like they did ours.

So you think we're quaint or losers because most of us live in the countryside? That's because we have enough sense to not live in filthy, smelly, crime-infested cesspools like New York or Chitcago. Make fun of our fresh air, and we'll kick your ass.

Last, but not least, DO NOT DARE to come down here and tell us how to barbecue. This will get your ass shot (right after it is kicked). You're lucky we let you come down here at all. Criticize our barbecue, and you will go home in a pine box. Minus your ass.

There are several good shops. I go to www.glauberssports.com. Their store is in Carrollton. They have good prices and you can dicker with them or trade.

You can go to Knob creek and for 10 bucks shot all you want. It is easy to get to.
