Howdy folks. I need some insurance to cover my guns in case of loss or theft. Now I don't have priceless heirlooms or collector pieces, just some handguns and long guns. I used to have an NRA membership that came with insurance but I let it expire. Any suggestions?

If you don't have a lot I would renew with the NRA. If you go that way you do have to turn on the insurance now though as I understand it. Simple few lines on the website and you're good.

If that doesn't work for you look at these guys;
https://collectinsure.com/

Some home owners may cover you with a rider but mine (USAA) was a pain, wanted a lot of info, and wasn't priced very well.

I bought a separate policy for my guns through State Farm. It doesn't cost that much and there's no deductible.

Your homeowners Ins. only covers up to $2500.00 and there's a deductible on top of that.

I have a $1000.00 deductible, that's the price of another gun right there.
If you have to pay a deductible, you might as well just throw your first gun out the window.

I do not regard insurance companies as trustworthy with respect to keeping an enumerated list of one's firearms from third parties. I'd look for coverage that only requires you to specify a total insured value without providing an enumerated list. Better still a policy where the value is not tightly connected with the address where they are stored.

^ then you need collect insure, the list is kept by you with photos, when I first got my policy they required a safe of at least 325lbs

Ramey;

View the term "insurance" as a whole package. That includes a policy issued by an insurance company, but also includes secure storage, home security, and your lifestyle. Depending on where you live and your lifestyle, any one area may need more attention than the others, but it really is a total package. When dealing with the insurance company, do make sure that you absolutely know what you're paying for vs what you're getting. The other aspects are your responsibility & should have just as much due diligence spent on them as you would put toward ascertaining the requirements & limitations of the insurance policy.

I carried a rider for awhile, but it was very expensive. When I upgraded my storage, I dropped it.

I don't think there are too many ways to insure guns that you're going to find affordable and palatable.

The issue isn’t whether you have heirlooms or collector pieces, it’s the cost to replace the guns you already have – typical consumer firearms.

For example, a gun owner might have a collection of 20 guns – some of his guns are inexpensive, such as a .22 LR pistol that could be replace for less than $300.

But he also has a Vepr 12, a PTR 91, and a Colt Competition Government 1911 – replacing those three guns alone would run at least $2600.

A gunowner needs to determine what it would cost to replace his entire collection, and purchase insurance accordingly.

I use the NRA deal....they only require detailed info if the item is over a specific amount...I think 2500...but don't quote me on that. They don't actually do the insurance but partner with another company....I don't have many modern items most of my stuff is historical....some don;t have SN#'s...

Renew with the NRA and then get supplemental as needed. NRAs price is competitive. If you don't keep all your guns in one place, the likelyhood of total loss is mitigated. For instance, I have a revolver secured in each vehicle and a rifle at my Mom's house for a little hunting if I happen to be down that way. I don't ensure the total amount but those are covered if stolen.

Eastern Insurance is the way to go, IMHO. Premium, great to do business with and coverage - hope no one has to find out how they are on the other end. (have heard good things though)

It all depends on your homeowners insurance. This is where you need to read your policy. Some policies say contents of the home are covered period. That means furniture, works of art, guns, or any contents is covered unless exceptions are listed.

A friend had about a dozen guns lost in flooding from a hurricane a few years ago. He made the error of claiming them as "gun collection". He didn't get anything from the insurance compamy for them. "Collections" were an exception to contents coverage. His insurance company required "collections" to be covered in a rider. If he had lost a "collection" of anything (Hummel figures, chess sets, etc) they needed to be covered separately. If he had claimed the guns as "contents" he would have been reimbursed.
