Besides Excel, most computers have a database, typically Access or similar - either way, you can tailor it to your needs. I have a small book from Bianchi I've been using for 20 years. With a database/spreadsheet, you can upload to a number of places including emailing it to yourself

The next version (2.1.0) of NM Collector Software JE (any collection, any platform)

The next version (2.1.0) of NM Collector Software JE (any collection, any platform) is now available. Please visit http://www.nmcollectorsoftware.com/upgrade/index.htm for download links. This new release deals with issues of performance facing collectors with very large collections and lots of pictures. Prior to this release pictures could only be stored in the database causing very slow start up and shut down times for very large collections with lots of pictures. The answer to this problem is to not store pictures in the database but to leave the pictures on the computer hard drive and store a path only to the pictures in the database.

In version 2.1.0 you can now choose where your pictures are stored. Not only that, but you can have the program copy or migrate your pictures from your database to your file system and vise-versa. If you copy your pictures they will remain in their original location after being copied to the new location. If you migrate the pictures they will be deleted from their original location. This provides an easy function by which you can take pictures that are scattered throughout your file system and migrate them to the same directory as NM Collector Software JE. If that directory happens to be on a USB flash drive (which is the preferred method for running NM Collector Software) you will now have a copy of all of your pictures on the same USB flash drive. Detailed step by step illustrated instructions for how to do this can be found in the examples provided at: http://www.nmcollectorsoftware.com/examples/

Of course, this release also provides new reports to support pictures located on the file system. In addition, it provides other new features and bug fixes including the following:

* Eliminated excess save warnings when data had already been saved.

* Modified NM Gun Collector migration to default to storing pictures in the file system rather than the database.

* Provide guidance for when help won't load - seems to be a Mac only problem.

I use Quicken...you can set up the columns yourself, keeps a running tally of costs, let's you attach pictures and notes to each entry. Excel would work too, but I'm not sure about attaching pictures.

I have used the Gun Tracker by BZ for many years. Sorry to see it go. I liked it because it included the option of including pictures and allowed notes for hoiw each gun was obtained and other interesting data.

Excel would work too, but I'm not sure about attaching pictures.

You can insert a photo into an Excel worksheet. I have a file with one sheet per gun. Each sheet contains serial number, acquisition/disposition info, amount paid, etc, and two pictures.

I don't have a lot of guns, and I don't do a lot of buying, selling or trading like some folks do. I doubt this would be a good method for a large or active collection, but it works for me.

Paper and pencil. No way anybody can snoop. Make a few copies, 1 for insurance, 1 for safety deposit box, etcetera. Not to sound paranoid, but.........what if?

NM Collector Software Version 2.4.0 Much Faster

NM Collector Software Version 2.4.0 now available for download. Large collections will see an order of magnitude improvement in response times with this new release. The database interface for Version 2.4.0 of NM Collector Software was rewritten to maximize performance. Here is a complete list of changes in this release:

  • Major database performance improvements (see benchmark results)[/*]
  • Added pop up calendar option for all dates[/*]
  • Report Improvements[/*]
  • -- Display clear error message when a missing font causes a report to fail[/*]
  • -- Reports can now be saved to PDF and XLS formats[/*]
  • Added common calibers to Ammo template[/*]
  • Added status messages on shut down to discourage people from killing the program while it is writing data to disk! People have lost data by “force closing” the program in the past.[/*]
  • Provide the option to write data to disk without having to close the program[/*]
  • Added input length validation check for combo boxes[/*]
  • Added Java version check on start up [/*]

Thanks!

Clay, thanks for the update. One feature I would like to see is the ability to turn off the license check at startup. I know Ihave a lifetime license, having to check OK on that dialog box every time is annoying.

Oh, and when I select a person or company in the receipt screen, I'd like to not have to select their FFL, address and such line by line. It should be tied to the selection of the name. Thanks.

Good Suggestions

Thank you - I will add your suggestions to my list of features to consider for the next release.

I use a spread sheet program to keep track which contains all relevant data. Truthfully, I would not remember all of them without the list. This spreadsheet is backed up off site daily along with all of the other data on the computer. New data from my other computers is added to the master backup as they are created and saved. Firearm lists are only a small part of the important files that are saved. My business files more important. The biggest problem I see is when files can not be opened due to lack of that particular software as time moves forward. Lotus, Word Perfect, and some of the old data base programs are problematic and now everything is saved using MS software.

I came across an app on the Droid marketplace called Gunventory. While the functionality looks good, it requires full Internet access - meaning the author of the app, or anyone else the authored allowed - could access your inventory at any time.

No thanks.

I'll stick with a spreadsheet that I encrypt and back up to a thumb drive that I keep in my EDC kit.

I personally like GunCount from Guns & Patriots, it allows multiple pics, ammo inventory, accessory inventory, and keeps track of the costs of everyhting and the value if you have the current values entered. Free version allows up to 10 guns, Plus version is unlimited and both are ATF compliant for FFL holders. http://www.humanevents.com/offers/offer.php?id=GNPGC01 thats the link for both versions

I made up an Access database with costs, photos, dates.....everything. I just liked it better then having to make V-lookup tables in excel.

As a heads up, Gun Count is actually a rebranded version of MyGunDB I offered to Guns and Patriots in order to help support their organization. It's part of the rebranding system I created for that purpose -- they're the only white label rebrand though; the rest are just special editions, like I have for the CMP and others.

NM Collector Version 2.5.3 available

I have tried to hold back on posting to THR so as to avoid spamming but this seems to be turning into a forum for software developers to promote their products (which I think is a great thing ! - thanks THR!).

Anyway, NM Collector Software is up to version 2.5.3 now. It is very important that current users download and install the upgrade as it does include some important bug fixes. It also makes branding easier in case anyone wishes to brand the software and offer it on their site in order to provide funding for their particular cause (thaks for the idea Wolfrage - mine should be coming to CMP and others soon).

You can download the latest upgrade from my NM Collector Software - JE - Collecting Software download page.

I started out offering NM Gun Collector software for free to certain groups that I am affiliated with. However, the word is spreading and I really do not restrict access to the web site so I suppose you are correct. It is free to everyone. I just have not been promoting it to everyone.

:)

Thanks,

Clay
