I wrote my own that runs on a smallish server in my living room. Postgresql back end, using crypto on important fields directly, working on a PHP front end and its all running in a FreeBSD jail. Setup only to record firearms (manufacturer, model, serial number, photos, caliber, misc. notes, etc...) right now - works pretty well; nightly backups locally (cycled over a week) - need to work out my remote backup strategy still. Not enough time to finish all my side projects... >_>
Really though, depending on the size of your collection and what you're recording (if its just firearms) you can easily get away with a small spreadsheet on a USB drive.
