Gun Kit from Cabelas???

Looks like they've already done the hard parts. Everything appears to be inletted and it looks like all the key measurements and holes have been drilled. Even appears the trigger is set up. So it would just be a matter of putting it together to make sure it lines up, completing the sanding, resolving any rough spots and doing the coats of BLO (or whatever) before final re-assembly.

I don't, but what I usually do in these circumstances is read the reviews that are listed with the product and note the dates. Sometimes, things get corrected by the manufacturer.

Case in point. I got a Pietta Remington from Cabelas a few years back. Action sucked and the gun had manufacturer marks on it (file marks, etc...) that should have been buffed out before it was put together. I said then I would never get another Pietta.

Since then, it appears that Pietta has turned things around and come close to Uberti in quality.

The reviews on this gun seem to indicate that it would not be a cakewalk to make, but worth the effort.

The Doc is out now.

Below is a thread with some details about building a Lyman Great Plains flintlock kit also from Investarms.
The main difference being that this GP model has a longer barrel but not a brass patchbox, and steel rather than brass furniture.
The inletting for the unfinished patchbox of a Cabela's Hawken kit that I saw wasn't deep enough for it to meet flush on the top and bottom edges to match the stock contour so the metal would need to be taken down for it to fit properly. A lot of work to do by hand, but then each kit might be different.

I've done a CVA kit back in the day and a T/C kit that I'm redoing a second time. You well have some very minor inletting and a lot of sanding. You can add a butt plate and other fancy trim. I think the Lyman GPR is the best kit to buy and not much more money.

Bought one of those for my son a Christmas ago. (He was 12) Great project for the 2 of us. A little bit of shaping by the butt plate, then mainly just stock sanding. A little filing and lots of polishing on the brass, then finishing the stock and bluing the barrel. A good looking and shooting rifle.

I would
tell my wife ( don't have one , hurray ! ) what I am getting her with the hundred dollars , then buy myself whatever the heck I wanted , like a new Pedersoli 20 ga BP shotgun , or maybe half a dozen Remington 58's ........
Or how about a new Bass Boat ? Hmmm ?

I might let her shoot my gun , and I might let her ride in the front seat of my Bass Boat if she can shut her pie hole long enough about what I buy and don't buy . .
