Well, after a few year of trying to make things work here in PA my wife is still unable to land a job in her field ... so we are looking to relocate where she has better options (and where the headhunters are calling from). Now I just need to line up a job in one of the locations!

Being an EBR (AR-15) owner and CCW person I'm curious how our top contenders stack up for gun ownership and rights. Trying to piece this stuff together from across the web isn't easy so I'm hoping residents of the states in question will chime in. Big points - EBR restrictions, CCW easy of obtaining, storage or usage regs.

Here's our top contenders:
FL (Tampa)
TN (Nashville)
UT (SLC)
CT (Bridgeport)

Also appreciated would be any local tips (especially for the IT field for me) ... Please PM me!

Don't you know that Tennessee is the patron state of shooting stuff? :D

I'm not sure, but I would think the order would be TN, UT, FL, CT--going from most gun friendly to least gun friendly.

Tennessee has a very good gun ownership record and tradition. Being the patron state of shooting stuff does not hurt either.

CT seems to be the one to avoid based on this image:

Overall CT is not too bad. Just your standard AWB, discretionary LTC, etc. Nothing like NY, or MA. Though I would reconsider moving to Bridgeport. That would be the last place in CT I would move to. Also the tax burden is high in the state, much more so than NY or MA.

If what is said about Tennessee above is correct, Florida, Utah and Tennessee all have very good firearm laws.

I would take CT over any of the states it borders from a gun rights point of view, but it is not even in the same category as the other three. You really can't go wrong with Florida, Utah or Tennessee. Utah has the most reciprosity and the least restrictions on the three. I'd probably rank Florida second, but Tennessee isn't much worse.

Ummm,,, good luck in FL,UT, or TN... At least from AR15 perspective.. Unless you have a non-AR-15 clone like a Bushmaster XM-15 with no collapsable stock or flash suppressor...

There are other models similar available...

So it looks like CT is out if I want to keep my EBR (Bushy w/ 6 pos stock, flash hider) and I didn't even think of taxes being higher up there.

We were leaning heaviest toward FL or TN mainly because UT is a cross county move and CT is surrounded by unfriendly states (we both CCW).

I know our PA LTCF will be good in both FL and TN until we gain residency, so we should be covered for CCW in either location. Any other pros or cons I'm missing?

Anyone care to give me a little local intel on the Tampa and Nashville area?

Oh yeah, in case y'all are wondering, yes I'm mainly a lurker with my 12/02 join date and 10 posts! :D

Texas meets most of your requirements, and it has a lot of IT jobs. I wouldn't describe the CHL licensing procedure as all that difficult, but it is time consuming. However, it has the advantage of the fact that Texas recognizes the PA CHL, and thus you would be likely be able to continue carrying in Texas until your residency becomes established. I think you have to be a Texas resident for 6 months before you can apply for a Texas CHL, but don't quote me on that. In any case, there might be an overlap of 60-90 days after you apply for the CHL in Texas, during which you might not have received your new CHL, but your old permit is no longer valid. A good place to find out is http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_Forum/.

If the Pacific NorthWest sounds good to you there is a lot of high tech and IT jobs in the Portland, OR and Seattle, WA area. Both are shall issue states with pretty good gun laws although some of the transplanted Kali's would like to see Kali type gun laws here.

Tampa is just OK in my book. There are some pretty crappy areas to be found, so you'd have to watch where you end up working. The same could be said about over here in the Ft Lauderdale/Miami area though. I guess it depends on what you're used to. The gun laws are good here though. Being a south FL native, I'd advise you to also give TN a really good look... I know I am...

Tampa is flippin' hotter than heck and HUMID in the summer. NO amount of money could make that work. Yikes. But pretty cool to visit in January.

As much as I hated living in CT while I was stationed there in the Navy Like Geek said it is pretty much shall issue for all intents and purposes. Even as a 24 year old non resident squid I was able to get a permit with no hassle. But, aside from that you couldn't pay me enough to live there again. My prefs of your choices would be UT Fl TN

romma, are saying AR 15's are not allowed in these 3 states?

as a FL native that got the heck out a year ago... DONT DO IT!!!...

tampa isnt too bad compared to say miami... but the whole state has become a cesspool over the past 5 years or so... crime is through the roof, housing prices mimic CA and NY... and if you dont speak spanish, you cant buy a soda in some areas...

TN is really nice... i loved the area around nashville when i visited there a couple months ago... and i hear that TN is pretty open about gun ownership...

check saysuncle.com for more on TN... hes a gunblogger from TN... in fact, shoot him an email, im sure he could give you the lowdown on that area

Thanks for all the replies folks!

Right now TN and UT are in the lead as my wife likes those areas the best.

We are trying to balance my career with hers and that's the reason for the relocation. I'm a SysAdmin (no degree but MCP and A+ certs) and she's a Cytogenetic Tech (BS in Microbiology). West-central PA hasn't panned out at all for her, so we're going to move where she has opportunity as IT is everywhere. She was contacted by a headhunter about Nashville and Salt Lake City, so I'm gearing up my job search for those areas now.

mekender - I'll check out the saysuncle.com blogger you mention.

So, is TN similar to PA then? Carry anywhere except gov't bldgs and shall issue? OC legal (not that I do much, but it makes cover garments less worrisome)? Class III items legal (someday, I hope to own)? How's the hunting? How about the same questions for UT?

Any good websites with housing and local info for Nashville and SLC?

Class III legal in UT. Hunting... I dunno. Lots of nutters in the hills during deer season, most pheasant land posted.

I recommend TN. :D

Super tactic-cool AR15's with one thousand round magazines are quite lawful to possess here in Florida.

"...for the IT field for me..." Talk to the head hunters who are calling your wife. Mind you, an experienced SysAdmin won't have much trouble finding work. (Getting the MCSE was an exercise in spending money($15,000Cdn) up here in Canada.)
I'd be doing on-line research via Yahoo or Google for the candidate cities. Particularly the real estate and help wanted pages of the local newspapers. Despite all the nonsense spouted about networking, etc. for jobs, the number of jobs in a local newspaper is a good indication of the local job market.

You're on the wrong end of the state. The area between Chester Co., PA, and the Princeton environs is absolutely lousy with high-tech, particularly big pharmas. As long as you stay out of NJ, you're good, and you can visit DE on a Fl non-resident CCW.
