Does anybody know the numbers? There are about three million members who at least see the cover of one of the NRA magazines every month.
At one time Guns and Ammo had over 300,000 subscribers, American Handgunner had about 190,000 and the rest had a great many less.

Have these numbers, gone up, gone down, or stayed the same?

Being several thousand miles from my desk and the media kits, as well as their being a least a year old at this point, I cannot give you the numbers.

However, many of them should be accessable through the web.

Note that they publishers will give numbers printed, numbers sold through rack sales, numbers sold through subscription, and other various foumula to justify readership, and therefore advertising potential. Most of these will be verified by an outside auditing firm.

Whenever looking for a set of statistics it is wise to think carefully as to what the goal is. The number of magazines published and number of readers can possibly vary widely. (The NRA publications are a good example of this).

I found this:
http://www.adage.com/page.cms?pageId=1020

Of 200 Magazines as of June 2003:

The American Rifleman is Number 55 at 1418,533
Field and Streem is number 51 with 1,513,331
American Hunter 81 with 1,083,852
Outdoor life #99 with 949,000
North American Hunter 131 with 687,000
GAme and fish ranks 153 with 561,603 readers,

The only gun magazine anywhere on the list is Guns and Ammo at number 181, and 470,446 sales.

Magazines less read include American Hockey, Audubon And Peterson's 4 Wheel drive. More popular are : Arthritis, Soap Opera Digest, Game Pro, Working Mother, and Sports Illustrated for kids.

It looks like Guns and Ammo is holding its own and the others nead not apply

I double checked the history for several years. Actually G&A had a circulation of 568, 755 on December 31, 2001. It has been dropping steadily ever since and had lost 98,309 readers by June '03.
