Gun Politics 101

Greetings all
As I understand it, there are approximately 80,000 legal gun owners in America. We use guns for target shooting, self defense, Hunting and collecting. Misuse of these guns is less then 0.2%.
There are approximately 4000 members in the "National Rifleman Association".

This tells me that approximately76,000 Americans need to seriously think about joining the "National Rifleman Association". The NRA is one of the most power full lobbys in America that fight for your constitutional right to "Keep and Bear Arms".
The NRA is one of the few ways the average American can make their voices heard.
Wake up America and smell the coffee :)

Charles, where are you getting your numbers?
Fo' real

Only 80k legal gun owners? Seriously? And only 4k in the NRA? Those sound suuuuuuper low IMO

Those numbers are definitely incorrect.

I thought the NRA had over 4 million members. There are around 40k concealed pistol permit holders in South Dakota alone.

I think he accidentally divided all his numbers by a hundred, because the amount of gun owners out there is between 70-90 million, if I recall correctly; basically 40-50% of the adult population.

Just offhand, NRA membership is likely between 4 and 5 million. This comment, from the board meeting cited, is interesting:

statistically, NRA membership is reported at a higher level by gun owners than is actually the case. NRA is one organization that people will claim to be a member of, even if not in actual fact.

That's hard for me to understand. Annual dues are around $35. That's a box of .357. Anyone who owns firearms and cherishes their 2nd Amendment rights should join the NRA, because when push comes to shove, they are the organization that most protects us from government regulation. They are far more effective in this regard than any president or member of Congress.

If you don't want to see us go down the same path Canada, England, and Australia have taken, join the NRA today and keep your dues current.

40 to 50% of the population live in households that have guns. The range has been pretty steady for decades, some surveys showing more or less than others. "Do you own a gun" gets a different response than "Does anyone in your household own a gun".

The DOJ National Institute of Justice, National Survey on the Ownership and Use of Firearms (survey conducted 1994, report written 1997): "In 1994, 44 million Americans owned 192 million firearms, 65 million of which were handguns. Although there were enough guns to have provided every U.S. adult with one, only 25 percent of adults actually owned firearms; 74 percent of gun owners possessed two or more."

Since 1994 there have been over 100 million NICS background checks, the majority reflecting approved gun purchases, maybe a fourth representing new owners, the majority representing purchases by gun owners.

The difference between % of gun owners and % of households owning guns has led to some disputes. Gary Kleck reported that 40% of defensive gun use DGU was by women, but Tom Smith disputed that, saying only 20% of gunowners were women. Of the DGUs by women known to me, half were with a gun owned by the woman, the other half were with a gun owned by someone else in the household.

this is probably going to upset some folks, too bad, there are many organizations besides the NRA, my father was an endowment member, i was a member for a time. in my opinion the nra is a self serving organization that is mainly concerned with the church going bunny hunter. i have NEVER seen an honest gun review in that rag, rather an expanded commerical for their advertisers, when is the last time for example you saw them talk about raven firearms, or hi point, etc. if its not a high dollar snob weapon, it doesnt exist to them. further, once you join, every month you are bombarded with alarmist mailings, begging for money, do they protect gun rights? some, those of their sponsors. any gun they dub unworthy, they cave in on, while doing lip service to firepower weapons, they sell those down the river as well. have you ever seen them test any of silva daniels guns? no. oh they kinda have to feature the m-16 and m-14 systems, our troops use them. after sending the nra untold dollars, upon his death, and those of other loyal members, that fought for this country, and supported the nra, they couldn't be bothered doing 1 line in their rag out of respect. i would reccomend GOA, since they are not in an ivory tower, they dont look down on the younger generation of gun owners and new views.

Art Eatman: " Please discuss the data, the numbers, etc. We don't need political philosophy or politics."

I thought the whole thread was under GUN POLITICS??

The NRA annual membership of $35.00 is reasonable for what they provide.. It's the constant asking for more money that annoys me enough not to re-up.

Sometimes, I wonder if the NRA plants a little controversy to get the general membership worked up enough to donate more....

The other side;

I'm married, been so all my life! I can say this with authority, nobody agrees with anyone about everything. Beside spouses, this applies to organizations. You say GOA, I say NRA. And I say 4.? Million of us can't be wrong. We're the eight hundred pound gorilla in congress and you say you don't like the gun reviews!!!! You don't get it. The issue is lobby power. When GOA calls congress, I don't see them getting their panties in a wad. But if the head of ILA calls I'll bet most congress critters take the call. If you don't think it beehooves you to join, then you just don't think.

There's over 71,000 legal CONCEALED WEAPONS PERMITS in Pasco County, Florida, alone.

I may believe there are 80 MILLION legal gun owners in America,(much closer to the 35% of the total population mark) but there's way more than 80K legally carrying a concealed weapon just in Florida...

 The name of this forum is "THR > Social Situations > Legal > Gun Politics". If you don't want politics discussed here, why did you start this thread by linking to two sites that are all about guns and politics?

Please explain why there is to be no discussion of politics in the "Gun Politics" forum.

No politics in gun politics....

It's just an oxymoron....? :banghead:

NRA has drifted pretty far away from it's heyday, I get pretty annoyed with the fearmongering tactics, we get enough of that from a certain like minded political sector.

The purpose of a forum like this is to share observations and pool group wisdom and resources.

One thing I've seen on other forums for discussing controversial topics (politics / religion) is they created a separate sub-forum that was only visible to registered members who opt-in to be able to access it. That way people who are easily offended or otherwise don't want to see that stuff don't have to, and anybody who takes action to participate can. Also if someone misbehaves themselves in there too much, it's easy to pull their access to that subforum.

It'd be extra work for the moderators, but maybe if there's enough interest they'd entertain the idea?

This is not a Gun Politics forum. This is a Legal forum, for the discussion of Legal issues associated with the RKBA.

Art provided links to external sites, and stated an expectation that the RKBA content of those sites be discussed without regard or comment to party or political affiliations. That is consistent with the forum rules that each of you agreed to when you joined THR.

It's really that simple.

Just out of curiosity, why don't we have a gun politics section here on THR? After all, gun rights and politics go hand in hand these days. I can't see how burying our heads in the sand about the issues will help promote our rights. If there is a dedicated section for it, it will greatly cut down on the number of closed/wasted threads around here.
