Noticed some surface rust on my most prized shotgun after it sat unused in the safe for only 2 weeks. The safe is in my air conditioned house. I don't belive the safe is air tight but not sure. It IS fire proof for 45 minutes or so. Question: Can I use one of those dehumidifiers that use the granular material in their own plastic bucket? I know they work on my boat to help dehumidify but for some reason thought I read once about them not being a good idea in safes. Thanks.

I have two golden rods in mine and I use the dessicant tubs outside the safe in my office. I have not had a problem with rust knock on wood.

I also have two Goldenrod dehumdifiers in my safe. Plus, I have three trays of dessicant as well as one of those boxed dessicant packages that you see at some gun shops. Still, with the high humidity we've had the last several days, the level in my safe ranges from 44% to 52%.

During the winter months it's under 30%.

I've posted questions here about what a safe level is, but never got a truly educated answer.

Trouble lamp with 25 watt bulb. The idea is to keep the temp higher than the room temp.

I have 900 grams of silica gel in both my safes with a hygrometer also.
Humidity remains at a constant 55% in the tropics of South Florida.

Home ac set to constant 78.
One safe is opened everyday, the other once a week to check.

I wipe my guns down with a rag that has been wet with "corrosion x for guns" 3x a year on the ones that don't get used regularly.
Not dripping, but damp.

CX won't evaporate and penetrates the pours of the metal bonding with the same.

I don't like the golden rods because of the heat that is developed.
Other problems can occur because of the heat.

I don't see how using 2 GoldenRods to keep my safe 3 or 4 degrees warmer than the surrounding basement will lead to problems. In any event, it hasn't yet. No AC in the basement either, although it stays fairly cool and very damp and could use it. I run a large dehumidifier once a week or so and pull 3.5 gallons out of an unfinished 22x32 space.

A smaller safe in the bedroom on the unairconditioned top floor has had a GR in it for years and there have been no problems - heck, on a typical summer day it's 90*F or so up there. Our heat and humidity ranks right up there with the best(or worst if you prefer.) Thank goodness for high ceilings, fans, large shaded windows and a cool sleeping porch. There is an airconditioned first floor for company and sissies. ;)

I tried a box of dessicant and a tub of the stuff made for drying flowers. It was a waste of time in the basement safe w/ 2 GRods. I'd have to recharge the stuff once a week at a minimum to get any benefit out of it.

Being partially color blind, I determined when it needed to be recharged by weighing the stuff on a postal scale until it stopped gaining weight. No more trying to see little pink dots and such.

found somthing that really works!

Just FYI, I purchased a Liberty safe model d-50, and had a bit of a moisture problem beeing in florida, I did some research on a few dehumidifaction products, after it was said and done I made my mind up to go with Eva-dry mini dehumidifier, and it works GREAT!!!! Best of all there is no power needed to run the item just put it in the safe and forget it, The only time you need to fool with it is when its needs to be renewed, and even then its not that bad, just plug it into any wall outlet and there are crystals on the front that let you know when its is ready. It normally takes about 8 hours to renew. I found them on fargainbargain.com. I highly reccommend this product to any of you having moisture problems.

I was leafing through a Brigade Quartermasters catalog and I noticed that they had Dessicant or dessicant like packs. If I remember correctly, they were the kind that you can rejuvinate by putting them in the oven.

Yea I saw those, I didnt care too leave my oven on for that long to regenerate the pack. I anyone else has tried the eva-dry please let me know how it worked for you.
