I am in the process of buying a gun safe and have 2 possible locations.

1. inside computer/bedroom which is finished. Might get some grief regarding bolting to the floor. Also would be possibly visible from exterior windows.

2.inside under garage which is unheated but safe can be bolted anywhere and possible hidden or camoflaged

Main concern is temperature/humidity variations.
I am in Wisconsin so room temp varies from singles digits to 90+ in the garage.
Would adding a goldenrod negate the humidity in the summer?

Another factor to consider is this is a $700-800 safe not a top end model.

Any advice is aprreciated.

My gunsafe is able to be accessed quickly from my bed, but its in the closet so its out of the way. If you are storing your HD guns there, definitely want it accessible. If not, then climate/hidden might be bigger concerns.

gun safe is will not have HD kept inside. Strictly lockable storage for guns and ammo. I need to keep things aways from youngsters first and bad guys second,

Of the two options, I'd keep it in the closet (assuming there's a closet) of the bedroom. Buy a couple of desicant dehumidifiers and keep them charged. I also put weather stripping around the door jamb of my safe.

My RSC [a Liberty Colonial Series] is located in our bedroom; easily accessible,
but well hidden from sight. Climate control here in central Bama'Land is of a
major concern; but if your home has central AC/Heat, its not a big issue. I keep
all firearms, knives, etc. coated with a good coat of Eezox which I apply real
frequently~! ;) :D

Well hidden in plain sight is the best option.:) Anyone want to break into a couple of old beat up padlocked freezers?? Break inside it and you find the gunsafe and that is locked/bolted to floor. Anyway if it is hidden or in a closet then they have to FIND it first. Then figure out how to get into it after. Time is critical and they may not have much to hunt for stuff.

An unheated garage is a really bad idea. Ever notice how metal things rust in the garage? It is because of the change in temprature. If you have a cold night and a the morning sun warms the air too rapidly it will cause the denser cold steel objects to "sweat" or draw moisture from the warmer air and this causes rust. The only exception would be if you lived some place like a desert with very low humidity.

I would not store guns in an unheated garage in Wisconsin -- inside a safe or not.

Mine is in bedroom closet, bolted to outside wall 2x's and floor joist. Our HD guns are kept under our pillows, when seconds count retrieving from a safe, those seconds can be better utilized with weapon at the ready.

Yes I am, I own a bunch of guns & I have no gun safes.............
Well, depending were you live and who knows of your openness in false security it like playing russian roulete keep pulling that trigger and all goes black sooner or later...

I can't tell if this guy is serious, or one of the people I saw on doomsday preppers. Gun safes are generally a good idea for a number of reasons, but it's your life, hopefully your decision never costs somebody else theirs. I can understand a preference for not using one, but to argue the logic against one is... interesting.

I'm in Minnesota and briefly thought about setting a RSC in my garage. After researching and reading, it sounded like a bad idea with the possible temperature swings (and the condensation that comes with them) we can experience in this part of the country.

I'd shoot for a location that's in the conditioned part of your home.

Yes I am serious, but I will admit if I didn`t own this place, I would probably have a gun safe.................

This guy right here will have something to say about someone breaking in.................

Bolted down &hidden behind door for now, will soon go into a walkin closet w /steel frame &door behind a panel. H.D. guns go under pillow, with AR.& PSG. go between bed &nite table . Table has hook for B.P. vest, ( combat style w/flash lite, ammo & cellphone.)that stays there until needed. When I had children in home had vest for them and used safe as part of cover for kids to hide behind. Came in handy when L.E.was rounding up tweakers in neighborhood!

1. I keep a few guns always accessible.

2. I do have a gun safe in my bedroom closet, but I only keep what I consider replaceable guns in it because the safe is a big sign that says "Hey, all my guns are right here!"

3. The advantage of living in a run-down 19th century farmhouse is that there are endless places to build hidey-holes in the framing as you repair and rebuild.

Enough said.

There's nothing wrong with keeping a safe in the garage, you just have to keep a golden rod or light bulb in it to keep it heated.

I'd go for the inside the house option before the garage every time.
