I'm considering getting a gunsafe, but I'm wondering how secure they really are. Granted, they are obviously more secure than sticking them in the closet, but I've seen several stories in the last week where guns were taken from a "gunsafe" although the news story never indicates if it is a big one or the little ones that you can pick up and make off with.

They seem solid and secure to me, but not being a scum sucking thief, I don't know what really constitutes secure. I saw a Stack-On 24 gun safe for $500 on sale yesterday, ~500lbs. It would take some serious time and effort to get it out of the basement. But I also just saw a story in another thread here that side a safe had been pried open. Can you actually pry these things open or was it just a gun cabinet and not a safe?

My thought is that most criminals are probably looking for the quick, in/out easy score and don't want to spend hours getting into a large safe. I also know a lot of people seem to insist that if the gun is hidden inside a false wall, etc, the guns are safer than in a safe. I would think that a criminal would be familiar with a lot of the tricks for hiding things.

What are your thoughts on the security of gunsafes? (I'm intentionally not mentioning the safety issues of NOT having the guns secured. That is a separate issue.)

Welcome to THR.

If you use the search feature above using the terms "RSC safe" you should pull up over a hundred threads dealing with Residential Security Containers (gun safes) and safes. We have a couple of members who are in the safe industry and who have provided a great deal of invaluable input; and there is a wealth of useful information in these threads.

Thanks.

There really are a lot of threads to investigate. I have to admit I think I've been spoiled by google search engines. I didn't see an empty white window for a search so assumed there wasn't one. I guess there are worse kinds of "tunnel vision" to have.
