Gun safes

I'm all for safes and other means to secure firearms. However, I'm NOT all for mandating specific universal storage requirements for my firearms.

This is a matter of personal responsibility, in my opinion, and as with all other things for which I am personally responsible, I expect to be held accountable for my actions if warranted.

If I own a number of firearms, I would expect the majjority of them to be secured somehow. Whether this is by safe, locked cabinet, hidden storage, or whatever, it only makes sense.

However, I would not necessarily have ALL my firearms secured in such a manner. I would not, for example, routinely secure a home defense weapon in a $700 safe. This somewhat mitigates its role as a "home defense weapon".

Common sense should dictate how, indeed even whether, any given firearm should be "secured" by whatever means.

Unfortunately, common sense does not seem to be as universal a commodity as the word "common" would imply. There are a number of firearms owners out there who do the rest of us no justice by their actions.
I have a gun locker for order and organization...not for the illusion of security, though granted it does serve as piece of a layered security system that starts with the common sense and vigilance of its owner. ;)

I put my guns in a safe to protect from loss by theft. I don't worry about a mentally ill person getting them...besides..Feinstein is in Sacramento and that is 250 miles away. Just a warning....you lose your guns in a burglary and you will never get them back and in today's climate you can't replace them either.

If you own NFA weapons as an individual, one of the conditions is that no one else has access to the weapons in your absence. (That would be considered a "transfer" of possession.) That's one reason why I have a safe -- to keep my wife from having access to the machine guns. Not that she has the least bit interest in them anyway.

Same here, I just kept em in a closet until my collection started getting more expensive and justified the cost of a good safe. Secondary concern, unlikely as it may be, i'd hate to come home to find a burgler and get shot with my own gun that i left unsecure.

I am all in favor of prudent behavior. I object, however, to the government mandating it. Even more so, when a fundamental right is involved.

AlexanderA - Which of course, one of the primary benefits of an NFA trust. Not that I wouldn't keep NFA items in a safe or RSC.

I have a gun 'cabinet.' I concede that it is nothing more than a "better than nothing" approach to keeping my guns secure.

At this point in time, if you own any 'modern sporting rifles' (aka, AR 15s), then it only makes sense to have a gun safe. Those puppies get stolen, and you might NEVER have another AR 15 ever again.
