Will be visiting Charleston, SC this summer for vacation. Son-in-law and I like guns, army surplus, nice pawn shops. Anyone know of some places we could visit along these lines? Thanks. Don
ATP Gunshop isn't a good place to shop (prices too high) - but they have a great range. Tons of rental guns to try out and their rates are only $5 to shoot as long as you want and $5 to rent one of their guns (for rental guns you have to shoot ammo bought from them though).
They also rent full-autos as well ($35 for full auto rental IIRC), though with the same "our ammo" stipulation and naturally ammo goes fast when shooting full auto .
Other than that there's not a lot that stands out. There are a few other gun shops but none noteworthy for a visitor. Palmetto State Armory is great, but that's closer to Columbia. I've know people to drive there from Charleston to pick up certain things (particularly reloading supplies).
If you're up for trying a shooting competition Palmetto Gun Club is doing something just about every weekend (USPSA 1st Saturday, ICORE 2nd Sunday, IDPA 3rd Saturday, Steel Challenge 4th Saturday).
It's disappointing that there aren't better gun shops in the area. ATP is a nice facility with good selection but the pricing is insane. I also order my guns online
Coastal Firearms on Highway 41 (Cainhoy, SC) is about a 20 minute drive from downtown. They have an ok selection of new and used stuff, prices are "typical gun shop" in my opinion, in other words higher than you could find online.
Coastal Firearms is ok (I work 5 minutes away). The guys that run it are really nice and you won't be pressured to buy like at ATP, but it's a pretty small shop. There is a public outdoor range ~20 minutes from there, so if you're looking for a free place to do some shooting it's available.
