I went to a local gun show today to pick up a book on 1911s, and maybe a couple of mags. No books, but I did pick up four CMC Shooting Stars. I also saw a few Garands, the most inexpensive being $1500. There was one beauty there sporting beautiful striped walnut, it looked as if it was wearing a new stock. Didn't feel like spending two grand on it though. I definitely will be getting mine through the CMP.
The Garand is everything I expected. Massive and heavy, you just know you are holding an old warhorse in your hands. I still want it despite its weight, or maybe I want one because of it. All I know is that this rifle is all business, and I like that. It was made for tough times and when I get one it'll be comfortable that I have an old veteran by my side.
I saw another rifle that I've been taking a hard look at, the CZ-452 Trainer. I've read good things about CZ rifles, but I've never been able to find one in person. They seem to fly under the radar. There were two models at the show. The problem was that I didn't bring enough cash with me because I had planned to only buy accessories, not firearms. I won't be making that mistake again though. Next time I go to a show I'll be sure to bring a nice chunk of change. At least I remembered to pick up a card though. The person who sold me the Shooting Stars told me that he regularly stocks the rifle and he sells them at a good price. I'll be picking one up after the holidays.
