The Dixie Gun and Knife show was in town the other day, and I went and spent quite a bit of money. I'm not actually sure if I bought any new knives, except for one. Here they are:
1. Old Hickory 7" Butcher Knife. F&F was pretty rough, and it's dull. Need to break out the sharpener. Other than that, it feels good to work with, and should become one of my go-to kitchen knives.
2. A Camillus/ Western skinner. I'm generally proud of this find. It has a simple rubber handle and nylon sheath, and is marked "Craftsman" as in the Sears brand stuff. It was only 9$, and it takes a nice edge, for whatever stainless it is. It''' become a beater fixed blade.
3. Victorinox Classic and Wenger Esquire. Both pulled out of a junk bin for 1$.
4. A yellow Schrade trapper. Carbon blades that look like they have been sharpened quite a lot. Still take a nice edge, though. 10$, USA made, nice little carry piece.
5. An Imperial Kamp-King, missing its bail and with a good deal of rust. I figure I'll clean this one up. $5.
6. A Colonial stockman, same story. $5.
7. A small pen knife whose brand I can't remember for the life of me. Carbon and US, I'm pretty sure. $3.
8. Just because: a Cold Steel Sharkie and a CIA "Letter Opener". $7 together.
9. Last, but by no means least, the biggest purchase I made. A Cattaragus Quartermaster, all original. I'm fairly sure it's a WWII era knife. The knife itself is in great shape, but the sheath is pretty dinged up. The knife is pretty dull, and it's gonna take some time with the Sharpmaker to get it back to working sharpness. But I like it's heft and balance- although I might try and find a dinged up one on Ebay or order an Ontario to use for outdoor/beater use. The best part was the price- $55.
That's all. I love them all, or, more accurately, will love them all after I'm done with them. My interest was peaked in a few knives that I handled, though. 1. Does anybody make a copy or reproduction of the Bolo that was issued to artillery crews and the like in WWI? 2. Where can I find the best price on an Ontario Air Force Survival knife?- you know, the one with the saw back and whetstone in the sheath? I handled one at the show and it fit my hand perfectly, much better than the 5" KaBar.

You probably should have bought that one. People report Ontario's quality varies and if you can handle one before you buy and check the quality of the workmanship esp on the grinding it may be worth the extra few bucks. The cheapest prices on the web may be factory seconds too. There's also a non Ontario knock off out there for around $10-20.

www.knifetests.com just did a destruction test on the Ontario Air Force Pilot Survival knife if you're interested.
