I am interested in going to the gun show in Houston this weekend. For years, I had heard that the Houston show (I grew up going to San Antonio area shows in the 80s and 90s) was the best (of course, only recently heard about the Tulsa show being the Holy Grail--but I can't rationalize driving that far). Houston is only about an hour and a half drive for me (~$30 in gas).

I would appreciate any insight as to what opinions folks have of it. I am taking my 12yr old son with me (budding gun enthusiast himself). Specifically, how much/where to park and do they have concessions in the building? I have been to gun shows in the past in Austin that were mostly a craft show--smoked meats/jerky show--camo gear kind of stuff shows, more than gun shows. That was disappointing. About how many tables is the Houston show? Their website is pretty lean on information.

Are the ones in Conroe (closer to me) just as good?

thanks

Plenty of parking across the street. It's a quick, decent walk but not bad. I think it was $10 or $20 to park last time.
The show is huge and has plenty of guns, not crafts and jerky. If you haven't been then it's worth the $30 in gas, parking and admission.
I think they had concessions, plenty of places to eat around though that probably taste much better.

The GRB is a god show, but if you can't make that one there's another good show, the Houston Gun Collectors Association at Reliant Hall (by the Astrodome) on May 25-26. Parking in the dome lot and "dome dogs" are available inside. This is the original Houston Gun Show, and while it's not the show it was 20 years ago, it's still a good one. About 1,000 tables as I recall, and no jewelry/jerky/antiques.

thanks

Ah, so the one at Reliant is the original one I used to hear about. Thanks for the tip. I will have to look into that. Thanks.

And thanks nosmr2 for the info on the one this weekend. Many thanks.

I went to the George Brown show several years ago. There was a table set up selling hot sauce, with chips and samples of the 3 different varities, "Hot as Hell, Hotter than Hell, and the ultimate Nuclear Hell." My buddy on a dare tried the Nuclear Hell, his face went red and then he began to choke. A small child and his dad were there, the boy happened to be eating a vanilla cone. My buddy in his distress took the cone from the child and bit off a large portion of the icecream. SO don't try the hot sauce unless there is icecream close by. There were quite afew guns there also but all I remember was my buddy trying the hotsauce.

see, now this is the type of advice that might save a life. I may have to give it a try--the gun show--not the hot sauce. I am a major wimp with hot sauce. thanks

I know several vendors there. There are about 5 major gun dealers that show up. Dale does coatings for firearms so if you have a rusty pistol he can help and give it any color you want. Cypress Firearms is a small dealer but has the high end stuff and it is a Class III dealer. Also, Steve and Donna will be over at the Cypress booth. Steve is a Master shooter for IDPA and is helping to form a shooting club up at Thunder near the Woodlands. If you want to info on firearms or shooting, Steve is your man and Donna is your gal. Of course Thunder shooting club is right next door and the club has been filmed for a program. Heath deals with flash drives and flash drive attachments along with flash lights. Also, the firearm insurance company will be their, for a yearly fee you have a lawyer for after the gun went bang. I don't know if the Glocksmith will be there, I hope he is because I need some improvement work. I think there will be two major ammo dealers but at least one. I pay for the parking underground which has the entrance across the street from GRB at about the middle. Yes, I have been out there way to many times but I do enjoy visiting my friends.

While the GRB show is nice easily second best, the one IMHO worth driving in for is the HGCA show at Reliant, May 25-26.

thanks

I may have to skip the show this weekend and do the one in Reliant later in May--I have been battling allergies all week and it is going to get the best of me. But thanks to all for their helpful advice.

ALL the shows in Houston have some jewelry and jerky, but usually just a few tables.
