I was wondering if the Houston gun show at Reliant stadium is as good as it sounds? I'm from the Austin area and always find time to attend the Saxet show. It's worth the admittance fee just for the deals on ammo. Just how big is the Houston show and are there deals to be found. Or is it a big selection with even bigger prices. Thanks

Pretty big show, even has class 3 dealers. No ammo for sale at all though.

One thing I like about it is it appears that they don't allow all the gold/beanie baby dealers in. That's just from reading their website.

I'm also in austin, and went to the show in houston about a year ago. I was pretty impressed, to the point where it's hard to go to the Saxet show and not be really disapointed. Lots of tables, lots of guns, I don't remember any super good deals, but it was still a good time. They do have some collectable non gun crap, but I think it was pretty well separated from the gun tables.

As an added feature, if you go on the right weekend they often seem to match them up with a, how shall i say, more sterotypically feminine exibit. When I went they were doing a nutcracker and porcelain doll exibit in the next room, so my girlfriend spent several hours doing that while I looked at guns. Everyone was happy at the end of the day.

waterhouse,

From your description it sounds more like you were at the show at the George R. Brown Convention Center rather than the Reliant Stadium show that longhorngunman is talking about. Am I right in that assumption?

Nope. No ammo.

Gotta wait for the GRB show for that one...It packs some decent deals as far as ammo goes...

also the Pasadena show is generally a good place to get the goods.

I'm sure it wasn't George R. Brown, but I'm not positive if it was at reliant. Just to be clear, Reliant is where the Texans play next to the Astrodome right? It was in the Reliant parking lot, but it may have been the astro arena (if they still call it that) or one of the other big buildings around there. (I haven't lived in houston for about 12 years.)

I just know when we showed up there were a couple pretty large exhibit halls, one of which was the gun show, and one was the doll show. You had to buy separate tickets for each, so they weren't connected. Anyhow, pretty good gun show either way.

waterhouse,

it was a show at the Reliant Center, but it was not one promoted by HGCA (Houston Gun Collectors Association). the really good gun show in Houston is that one but no ammo allowed. they have ammo nazis walking around to enforce that too.

George R. Brown is a smaller show. it is about the size of the San Antonio SAXET show, which, in my opinion, is the best show in Central TX. Austin is a good show too, but San Antonio is a larger show. same show promoter too (SAXET for Austin and San Antonio).

if you come by the Austin show next week stop by and say hello, i have the M249SAW on the table.

thanks! :)

spreadfire,

I'll be out of town for a wedding during that show, but I'm usually at the ones in austin. Do you usually get a table? I'll definitely look for you next month.

I hope the reason for no ammo is to minimize the possibility of a negligent discharge.

Yes, a negligent discharge from all the weapons with their actions "locked" by little zip-ties. They told me it had something to do with the rules for the center but I think it is just some bogus "saftey" rule that an uninformed busybody came up with.

A gunshow without ammo is like a
burger king without burgers
Amen, brother.

Which is why I only attend the shows at the GRB. They are still large enough for me to feel like I'm sick of being at the show by the time I see everything. :)

They don't allow ammo to be sold in the show at the Bell County Expo center outside of Temple and Killeen either but apparently it's due to a county law. There is one guy who sells ammo in the parking lot outside of the show. Luckily he seems to be a good guy who doesn't monopolize the fact that he's the only one selling ammo and he has good prices.
