I went to the Eastman's Gunshow here in Savannah today with the express purpose of picking up another 1911-pattern pistol. I was considering a Norinco, a NRM, or a Springer GI to use as a base pistol for customization: I was even thinking of sending it to Dave Berryhill for his MEU(SOC) Replica treatment. I ending up striking gold.
I found a used 1991A1 in very good shape, but more than that, it had already been customized with several of the enhancements I was considering. IT had a King's beavertail, an ambi safety, a trigger job bringing it to an exceptionally crisp 4.5 Lbs., new sights, lowered ejection port, and a skeletonized hammer. With the exception of the hammer (I wanted a Commander hammer on mine) these were exactly what I wanted.
There's some scratches in the parkerizing, but they don't go through to the metal, and there's a little finish wear on it. That doesn't bother me- I think it gives the pistol character.
Best of all was the price. I was able to get it OTD for $500.00, and considering what I would have had to pay for all the add-on goodies, I'm extremely pleased. My first-ever Colt!
I won't be able to get to the range to shoot it until next weekend. It's going to be a long week!
