Looking at picking up a reasonably priced 1911, and have found one and am considering another.

I've found a plain jane unaltered Colt 1991A1 Old Roll Mark that can be had for around $475 OTD locally.

Also another contender would be a Taurus 1911, when I can find one.

I'm leaning towards the Colt, just because it is a Colt and i believe that long term it will be worth more. Also, if I were to go with the Colt, eventually it would be the basis for a semi-custom build consisting of front strap checkering and refinishing.

Which would you prefer and why?

I just bought a Colt 1991A1 Commander. I've only fired about 250 rounds through it, with a few malfunctions traced to one magazine. The other two magazines I've got have been perfect. Took me a little while to used to shooting a 45 again, but the last time out, it was coming back to me. (I had a GM Colt years ago.)

The Tarus looks nice, but there is just something about that horse on the grip.

I really want a Commander size gun, but am thinking the Government model is just too good of deal to pass on.

To tell you the truth, I didn't realize the one I bought was a Commander until after I had decided to buy it. I made that decision just seeing it in the display case. A GM isn't that much bigger IMHO. The GM I had years ago, I carried in a belt slide holster, and it wasn't any more trouble to conceal than the Commander is.

If you want the Colt, get it.

The Colt is a better deal.

The older 1991AI roll mark is not as desirable. I often see them in the $500.

The Taurus is going to devalue as soon as you take it out of the box. The Colt will not. You could take it fire 1000 rounds and sell it foe the same price you bought it.

Taurus, of course

You should definately get the Taurus. Great gun. But to solve your remorse problems after the sale, buy the colt also, and sell it to me. I'll be happy to take it off your hands, even though the Taurus is a better deal. Happy to help out...

Colt.

Easy decision.

Some people like to complain that Colt had QC problems in the 80s & 90s. Fine, but I'd submit that even the worst Colt is apt to be better than the Taurus. AND Colt has the name recognition in this field. Unless it's beat up or refinished, you will get your money back out of it.

I've got 3, a Government Model that was purchased in the mid-80s. A 1991A1 Commander that I bought new in '95, I guess. Finally, an Officer's ACP in stainless that was purchased around the same time as the Commander. Of the 3, the GM has the best finish, but there is a machining flaw on the frame that I missed when I bought it. I've since modified the guns by adding Bomar sights and a safety. It functions perfectly and accuracy is exceptional. Even with the mods, that would would turn $500 I'm sure.

Go with the Colt.

The ORM Colts make a great platform for custom work. Here's a picture of my ORM Commander that I did some mild custom work on.

Why would you even consider a T when you can get a Colt .Even used is a better deal. I got tired of having trouble with all the Brand X and have REPLACED EACH WITH A COLT, They all work and I can carry any of them with out worry.

Colt.

I'll take $500 in quality over "$2,000" in bells and whistles for $500. JustMO, ymmv.
