I came in for work a few minutes ago and tried to log onto another firearms fourm and it said it was blocked!

I work for a catholic college and I understand they can block sites they see fit however this is rather nazi-ish if you ask me. These sites are neither against what they believe (as a matter of fact most are VERY supportive of the same goals and beliefs as my work)

This really irritates me. I read on some threads how others were blocked at work and was glad it was not me...well now it is me and there is not much I can do about it. I sent an e-mail to my boss but we are kinda outside the loop for things like this.

Needed to vent, thanks

P.S. guess I'll have to spend more time here seeing as they have not blocked this site.... "the high road" they must think its about getting "high" and there for ok:scrutiny:

Mine does this too, in a sense. We go thru a proxy controlled by our home office. Anything with a specific gun name, or "firearm", is blocked out. I keep finding new sites (like this one) and it works for a little while, then they block it out too.

Haven't found this one yet...

I feel for you. My surf speed at work is amazing, but the damn filter blocks me from most gun sites, citing the site as 'Militant'!
I thought of calling our webmasters and showing them what militant really is...but I digress. I should be working anyway....

My First post the THR.

It's Good to be King

I'm the guy that runs the web proxy and filter (along with the entire I.T. department) for our site.

The "firearms" category is one that I specifically do NOT block. :)

Monty,
I worked for the local Diocese for 10 years and finally got fed up all the antis, especially in news print. They acted like it was dogma (it's not) and not just some liberal's opinion. I finally took a leave of absence and never went back. Quantrill

Lotta new folks on this thread: welcome to THR!

So your boss is in on it too, Huh?

Whoa! Don't even want to go there.

So, do you block HCI and Mike Moore's sites?
Interesting question. Answers?

oh but they are! as long as I do my patrols and respond when called the rest of the time is ours.

my boss sent back saying he didn't understand it either and that this place is getting stranger every day. lol

I checked and they also blocked knife sites

UPDATE!!!!

I now have access to other web site I was refering to in my first post!!

see...stranger and stranger

Since I have no filter, I don't know if it is true or not, but some have said using a search engine like Google circumvents filters.

The system administrator where I work has more guns than I do.
He's always e-mailing me cool URALS.

I have the same problem. Which really sucks.

After all the trouble I went through to get internet access at my tool box. Yes I said tool box. I needed internet access to get repair info from Volkswagen. So I have a lap top w/ DVD drive in my tool box. OH well atleast I can still watch war movies at lunch.

For a while at lunch time I was able to access any of the gun forums I'm a member of. Now all of them are blocked. Yet the shop forman sits on his butt all day looking at E-Bay.

The media center at my high school did not block these things, but they were monitored. One student was doing a paper on the second amentment, and went to a pro-gun site. The least liked administrator came into the media center and almost banned that student from there.

Well, they probably figure that you should be working while you're on their clock. If they were trying to block your access from home I'd have sympathy for you, but not because you're place of employment (which doesn't seem to be in the gun business) has blocked your access to playing around.

Couple of solutions...

- http://www.anonymizer.com/surfing/ It effective but costs $30 per year.... You also have to have the rights on your work colmputer to be able to install software.

- http://anonbrowse0.cjb.net/ List of free services. Some work well some dont... Youll have to play with it and see what works for you.

There is ALWAYS a backdoor. You just have to grease the systems administrator in the right way...!

Good Luck!

I also have this problem. I was a big fan of the 1911 forum but got blocked. Was able to access it for awhile and then one day couldn't. I think it has something to do with keywords in the cookie maybe. I have not tried to clean out those cookies to see if it makes a difference though. Too busy working.

I also agree with the comment about the source being a work computer. They can block what they want, it's their computer after all

Since the IT department here consists entirely of ME, guess what gets blocked......

need a hint ? ? OK....less than zero

We don't need no stinkin' feeelters....

I could not handle having sites blocked, it's net or no net ! This site makes my day so much more interesting and gives me ammo for the fence sitters. I would have to hang up the tool belt if this job started doing dumb stuff like restricting access to certain websites. It is already immediate termination for visiting porn sites so why can't they let me have a little good clean fun.
Thanks THR !

I mainly browse thehighroad and jobrelatedstuff.com at school. Even though they stopped the majority of their filtering, I figure that these still look innocuous enough on a history file unless they actually pull it up.

well it may not be in the job description, but guess what? i just took 5 seconds to sit and flick my fingers. and i got paid for it. its great when the pay is the same no matter how hard you work. :neener:

and i probably spend as much time on gun forums as other coworkers spend on ebay or other sites related to their hobbys. the head honcho here makes 6 digits and does piddly squat. surfs for golf stuff and opens all the junk email. i'd say he does actual work for maybe 2 hours a day. he shows up an hour late, leaves early, and is a PITA when he is around.
