Gun Storage in a household with kids.

When my nephew was little he knew that if he wanted to see my handguns all he had to do was ask. We'd go straight to my stash, so no waiting. When his attention began to wander we'd put everything away till next time. I never said no, or not now, and I never left him alone in my house.

educating kids is mandatory. taking away the forbidden fruit feeling is mandatory. lastly in today's world locking them up is law in most states and just smart.

these are my feelings on the topic. trying to outsmart a 10 year old, by hiding a loaded gun, is a recipe for disaster.

a couple screws and a cheap metal toolbox from any hardware store, can be fastened to a table or bench, and a padlock will keep kids out of it. just hide the key, and put some old key around as a dummy key, so you can notice if someone pokes around and is trying to find the key.

My dad kept his guns locked in a cabinet. I knew where he hid the key. I do remember him always saying, all guns are fully loaded. They weren't but he always stressed they were. I keep mine secured for the most part, but no longer any kids in the house.

I used to sneak my dad's rifle out and shoot it. Kids are smart.

Education is key to keep them safe, just like you are doing with a new shooter, and a decent safe with a combination they don't know and have no clue where you wrote it down at if you did will keep them honest.
