Howdy THR folks!

I happen to be a US Marine serving OCONUS, and I have a gun addiction. There, I said it.

Anyways, being outside the mainland, I reside in a place without FFL's, along with strict gun laws. Though I can't walk into a fun store and purchase what I want, I still have access to Gunbroker and have located a few deals I'd really like to capitalize on. My home of record and driver's license all originate in Ohio, and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of an FFL who offers storage, and wouldn't mind accepting and holding a few guns I bought on Gunbroker until 2016 when I get back. I'm sitting on some pretty good bargains, and don't have much time to move on them before they expire.

Though there may be a few other methods, I prefer an FFL to minimize the hassle with the transferring and legal responsibility. My idea would be to purchase the firearms, have them transferred to the FFL who would sit on them and properly store them until 2016, come home and fill out the Form 4473, and take ownership. For their troubles, I'd of course be willing to pay for storage, shipping/transfers. I'm still a DoD employee, so it couldn't be TOO much, but I'd entertain any offers!

Thanks again THR,
The Kalashnikovkid

Did you try contacting any of the FFL's listed on Gunbroker?

I am in a similar situation - I am living OCONUS and have a deal with an FFL near my home of record who will order and hold any firearms I ask for. However, in my case I am usually back at least once a year. I originally found my dealer on-line. He happens to be a retired naval officer and knows how things are for people who may not be in the US all the time.

I try to keep my orders closer to planned trips home - but sometimes there have been deals I didn't want to miss and have asked him to hold items for me for more than a couple months.

As you stated in your OP, the easiest legal way to purchase your firearms on hold would be for an FFL to be willing to hold them for you. But there is an option you might not have thought about. Any FFL in any state could store the firearms for you. When you returned, you find an FFL in whatever state you reside in when you return, and the FFL holding the firearms would transfer/ship them to the local FFL for transfer to you. Yes, it is an extra transfer and shipping fee but that widely opens up the number of FFLs that would be willing to store the guns.

The only other legal method that I can think of would be for an Ohio resident to purchase the firearms for you from another Ohio resident in a face-to-face transaction, no FFL involved, and then you purchase/retrieve the firearms from the Ohio resident upon your return.

This is only legal if all three of you: seller, first purchaser "friend", and you are Ohio residents and no FFL is involved in the first transfer from seller to your friend.

Straw purchases only apply when a licensed dealer is involved, and firearms transactions without some FFL involvement are only legal at the Federal level between residents of the same state.

If a private party purchases or receives the firearms for you FROM AN FFL and holds them for you until your return, then it is a straw purchase.

Where do you live in Ohio? If you need help, I could find you a dealer near where you live, and arrange for them to directly receive the firearms when you win them on gujnbroker, etc, and store them until you return. I live near Akron/Cleveland. Greg/Wadsworth

I live near Cincinnati but I'm from southeast Ohio (for the past 25 years anyway). If you're in either of those areas I might be able to find some FFL's that would be willing to help out. People will do things for service men that they won't do for just anyone. I'm friends with a lot of gun shop owners. It wouldn't hurt to ask them. I see that you listed your home as "southern Ohio". I know several gun shop owners around the Portsmouth / Ironton area. And now I'm living around the West Union / Peebles area.

Kalashnikovkid, I use Bob Scott. He is an FFL in The Plains, Ohio. It's about halfway between Nelsonville and Athens. His email is [email protected] and his number is (740) 797-2855. He has a home based business but is very professional, knowledgable and good to talk to. He's transfered 3 or 4 guns for me and I've always had good experiences with him. I've never needed him to hold something for me for an extended period of time but you could ask him about that. Hope this helps and everything works out for you.

Sorry for the slow reply! Anyhow, thanks for all your responses. In regards to the directions and comments, I have contacted some of the FFL's I've done business and am currently awaiting replies. I do reside in Central Ohio, and would prefer to limit my scope within that region unless I do not hear anything back from the dealers I've solicited.

If I do not hear anything, I'll be sure to look up the people you fine people suggested!
