We all have a responsibility to secure our guns in a way that makes it as difficult as possible for unauthorized people to get them.
When I was a graduate student, had very little money and only a few firearms, I improvised a "gun safe" out of a foot locker and that was kept in a closet with a locked door. Not an ideal mode of storage but it raised the level of difficulty for someone to find them. As I could afford more I then was able to get one of the early Tredlock safes for $150-again a determined burglar with some tools could have defeated it but it was not going to be easy. Now I have large fire resistant safes to protect about 30 years of gun collecting-if I couldn't afford them I would still have cheaper, smaller safes or improvised storage boxes just to make it as difficult as possible for the bad guys.
