i just got an offer in the mail for gun tests magazine. is it any good? almost all the other mags i've bought say every gun they test is perfect. probably because of the ad $$$. i just want some real info without the writers being influenced by their advertisers. thanks, craig

I have a subscription to it and like it. I don't always aggree with the write up but they seem less biased then some gun rags. They will tell you what was good and bad and what could or should be changed.

I have found is usefull. While I don't always agree with them, I think they are doing their best to keep it real. Lots of good info and little BS.

I currently have a sub, and while I find most of the articles interesting (could care less about engraved O/U turkey guns, tho), I buy so few guns that I'm probably not getting my money's worth. They are pretty straight-up about their criticism, though. The Motorcycle Consumer News of the gun world.

I also have a subscription, it's not pretty but they don't pull punches and that's enjoyable.

At the same time, if you are looking for unbiased review of anything, you could probably get more and better information right here.

So yes if you like reading magazines and money isn't an issue, no if you are looking for straight up reviews. THR is typically a better resource for that . . . .

They're unbiased, but I don't think they really know their guns .:what:

I purchased one article from them - the review of the DPMS Panther Lite and the Bushmaster Superlight carbine. Their accuracy results were about spot-on, but they seemed not to know anything about ARs.

For example, they said that the DPMS fixed telestock felt flimsy, while the Bushie stock was more solid. They failed to mention that the Bushie fixed telestock uses a full-length A2 buffer, making it nearly as heavy as a standard A2 stock.

For gun info, just use the internet :).

They LOOOK like they are unbiased... however I've found them to be flat out wrong a lot. I wouldn't read it if it were free, now that I've read dozens free in the gun shop. There are always new ones in the gun shop and I stopped reading them...

THR is much more reliable, honorable and honest... spend you time here and take the cost of the subscription and pay pal it to the management here. :)

Or... bottom line, they are no less liars than the other gun rags, just more opinionated about thier own value.

I get Gun Tests. I think sometimes the make conclusions without a real good background or basis. They're unbiased, but I think you can do better research here and on other sites on the internet.

Also, I think they do these "comparisons" that have no real relevance. The price spread between the specimens is so vast that the comparison is useless. I wish they would do a better job comparing "apples to apples."

I'll probably let my subsciption expire without renewal. It is a little pricey for what you get.

The price spread between the specimens is so vast that the comparison is useless.

I tried the free subscription sample thing, I remember they compared a $1500 gun to a $650 gun or something, it was insane.

They also said the Bulgarian Makarov was something not to buy... They had some issues with their test sample, probably 'cause they monkeyed it up.

Guns Magazine and American Handgunner and used copies of Combat Handguns are good for me, lots of pictures, and now in Guns Magazine, the Surplus Locker series, showing me tons of stuff I can get with my C&R, with good descriptions and pictures and backgrounds!

Uninformed sometimes masquerades as unbiased.

I subscribed for a few yrs and generally enjoyed the aticles, but sometimes they seem completely in the dark about the guns they review. A search here or on TFL will turn up many such examples. The Makarov review got them lots of letters, I recall. I remember them reviewing Glock and SIG brand 357 SIG-chambered pistols, and stating that they could not make a direct SIG comparison to the Glock 31 b/c SIG did not make a full size gun in that caliber that they could test. Hello? The SIG 226, anyone?

i sent the card in for the free issue. i'll try it and see. as for getting info here it's first rate. if i have a question i look here first. i hardly have to post anything because whatever question i have has usually been answered here. thanks for the replies and info. craig

I gave up on them after they recomended the Standard arms Kel-tec P-11 copy, after having to send the first gun back to the factory because it locked up during inspection, then the second example sent the loaded chamber indicator flying to some unknown void after a few shots. Yeah, that sounds like a gun I would recomend.

I don't always agree with Gun Tests' final assessment of firearms (IE, one pistol had marginal accuracy, and perfect reliability and durability, and a fairly low cost, and they gave it a "don't buy") generally their testing is honest, and their reviews fair. Unfortunately, every issue isn't "worthwhile" to me (for instance, I don't care about ultra-high end 1911's or over-under shotguns), but neither is every issue of PCGamer, and I still get that every month.

To each his own, I suppose. I just like reading about guns, and I just started getting Gun Tests in the mail. Since my mom won't allow me to purchase gun mags at the store, it's my only source, other than the net, and I can't take my monitor to the bathroom. :D
