I am a welding instructor, I have access to lots of 1/4 inch plate. I can weld and fabricate parts for a safe.

What should I do for a lock?

I thought about devising something like a hidden lock or mechanism, but thought there might be some sort of vault lock or huge kryptonite padlock.

Any Ideas?

You can purchase the same type of locks used on your everyday safes.

Mechanical locks start at around $75 depending on the lock, and Electronic locks start at around $175.

You could always try one of those massive Harley locks.

Then there are those padlocks which open with a magnetic key.

A lock doesn't guarantee security but it sure can delay things.

security

I figure a store bought safe doesn't guarantee security either.

I just want someone to really have to work at it to get my stuff.

I was thinking about making channels out of angle iron to hold sheetrock for fire protection.

Brandon, one of the 'tricks' I've seen

The 'safe' used a conventional pad lock but -
the lock is in a 'well' or - horizontal deep
square pocket with just enough room
for the lock to be used.
The lock can be manuvered just enough to get a
key in the bottom of it to open it (or manuvered
enough to close it) but there is no
way to get a crow bar on it or bolt cutters or much
of anything.
Just a thought.

ok, where to get

where is the best place to purchase these types of items?

Brandon,

Why not up-armor an exisiting safe or locked container.

In doing so you could reinforce around the lock as others have suggested and put armor on all the accessible weak spots.
