Browning also makes a vault door that looks just like a normal interior door. That way if you have visitors over they don't realize that door in your finished basement where you're having the party leads to your gun/safe room. PerSec you know...

I am an achitect with over 35 years experience with design and forensic design work. I see lots of really bad advice in ths thread from amatuers in the design and construction industry. Building codes prohibit many of the ideas and yes these codes apply to residential construction as well as commercial construction. The codes have changed drastically over the past 10-12 years, You need a code conforming design and a building permit. Hire a qualified design professional to tackle these issues unless you want a disaster and a court order from the local authority having jurisdiction to tear down nonconforming work.
