Gun Vise

I am new to this site and I really appreciate what I have read so far.
Great web site.
I am looking for advice on a reliable gun vise that I can work on long guns from my Rock River AR 15 to my Weatherby and Remington Hunting rifles?
Any advice on company name or brand would be appreciated.

I just use a regular vice with plastic vice jaws like these

The Tipton "best" gun vise seems to be good for both AR style and traditional style rifles. The only complaint I have is it's plastic and light so you may want to find a way to clamp it down to your workspace.

A regular machinist's or mechanic's vise with the proper soft jaw protectors like mentioned already will likely work just fine. I know that in addition to the leather and plastic already mentioned, that brass or copper inserts are common and easily obtained.

Agree with Double Tap Drew,

The Tipton allows you to tip open your AR and lock it in place as well. All long guns fit very well and are supported and locked in front, back, or both.

+1 for the Tipton. Works for any type of gun but AR's especially.

The tipton vise is good, cheap alterative, an mag that doesnt feed no matter what. I know you all have one. Put that into a regular vise. Set the AR on that via the mag well, stable can clean or what ever and best of all,cheap.

for ARs I have a piece of plastic lumber that I routed down one end from 2x4 to fit in the magwell, and notched it for the mag catch. I just fix that in a regular vise, or clamp it to a table at a handy angle. works for most of what I need one for.

It turns and will hold non parallel pieces well. This one came from Garrett Wade. Some call it a Pattern Makers Vice.

On each corner of the Tipton you'll find a little molded-in hole that's perfect for bolting the vise to your bench. Since I don't have room for a permanent installation, I inserted a silicone foot into each hole. With these in place and the weight of a rifle, the vise adheres to my bench top securely enough for most work, doesn't leave a mark, and can be instantly placed and removed.

I don't know if they still make them or not but I've used a Deckers "vise" for decades and really like it. It's a wooden platform with a U-shaped channel at the front to position the barrel/fore-end and the same at the rear but with a large C-clamp to secure the butt. Great for cleaning rifle bores, mounting scopes, etc.
