Gun Wiki?

I was browsing through Wikicities today, and I thought, "somebody could do a really neat one of these about firearms."

In case you're not familiar with it, Wikicities allows folks to create their own community edited and run knowledge sites. Think of it as a miniature, specialised Wikipedia dedicated to a specific subject. Since it's decentralised, anyone can edit of add entries to it.

Any thoughts?

There's so much you could do with such a beast. The thing is, Wikipedia actually has quite a lot of information on it already, but with a dedicated wiki you could do a better job organizing it and add specific fields to help with searching/etc. Of course, in addition to firearms info, you could have info on stuff like training, competition, reloading, hunting, industry, law, etc.

Think of all the knowledge that is locked up in the millions of posts across THR, TFL, AR15, etc...

Huh! Which Wiki are you talking about? Media, City, encyclo_Pedia? There isn't anything in City, but lots in the other 2.

I have a hunch it's a passing fad. Something new will come along in due time, and suddenly, on-line user-made encyclopaedias will be half as exciting as citizens band radio.

A Wikicity site would have to include things not already covered by the encyclopedia and media Wiki sites. When you set up a City site they check the content against the pedia and media sites to see if your info can be included there.

This is an old, old thread, so please forgive me for reviving it if you aren't interested in such things...

Anyway, there is now a GunWiki site, and it is fascinating:

They invite people to write articles for the site, and have a wish list of articles they are particularly interested in. There is quite a lot of stuff on legal issues, and especially California gun law.

I'd really love to see more folks writing articles on TGW... it's just me most of the time.

There's a number of gun wikis out there now, but unfortunately most of them fall into the trap of trying to be this mix between world.guns.ru and wikipedia and just turn into 'white noise'. So far, I think TGW's stayed pretty well on target.
