SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- Gunfire broke out between two groups at a massive Halloween street party in the city's Castro district, wounding at least 10 people, including innocent bystanders, police said Wednesday.

The shooting began around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday as authorities were dispersing thousands of revelers under a curfew aimed at controlling the traditionally raucous party.

Two people were detained for questioning, but no one had been arrested early Wednesday, police Capt. Al Casciato said. He said two groups of people had gotten into an altercation when the shooting began.

One victim was listed in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital.

The once-spontaneous and unsanctioned party was taken over by the city four years ago after police recorded five stabbings and a number of assaults in a 2002 crowd of 500,000 people and confiscated a chain saw.

Officials and members of the district's large gay community said the party had started attracting gay bashers along with the usual colorfully costumed characters.

On Tuesday night, city officials ramped up the police presence, reduced the number of entertainment stages from three to one and cut off the festivities at 11 p.m.

"We had the sheriff's department screening people for weapons and alcohol. Obviously you have a major event -- a lot of different spots" to patrol, said police spokesman Neville Gittens said. "I can't explain how this happened. Unfortunately it did happen, and we are investigating to find out who is the cause of the shooting."

Ted Morales, 43, said he was working as a volunteer security guard for the event when he "heard someone empty their gun" in the crowd.

"When the shooting happened, people just dove to the ground like a wall of water," said Morales, who did not see what led up to the shooting. A woman standing near him was grazed in the neck by a bullet, he said.

Sophia Vlahiotis, who owns Capri Ristorante Pizza just yards from the scene, was outside selling pizzas when a crowd of people fleeing the bullets began running in her direction.

"They pushed the table over, the oven fell and then I realized it was gunshots," she said. "They were trying to get into the restaurant, there were so many people."

Vlahiotis, who did not see what led up to the shooting, said this year may be her last participating in the Halloween party.

"I'm still shaking," she said. "I don't know if I want to do this again. It's not worth my life."

It must be made up by the media. I mean, they have LAWS to stop this kind of thing from happening. Right??

Officials and members of the district's large gay community said the party had started attracting gay bashers along with the usual colorfully costumed characters.

So without any evidence at all, they are going to immediately start to position it as a "hate crime" against gays. Makes sense to me

I'm from just north of SF and I know that this story is B.S. The wonderful mayor Gavin Gruesome, oops, I mean Nuesome, banned handguns in city limits. there's no way this could be real. When the city makes a law, people stick by it, even criminals...

First off, the government (local, state, federal) is not in the party business. Why do they think they can have crowds, drinks and music and not have the crazyness that encompases it?

Further, when people put on masks and girls drink and run around scantily clad you ARE GOING TO HAVE PROBLEMS....

They should all be fired for proving that evolution is moving backwards.

:scrutiny:

This is a job for POOPERMAN, faster than a laxitive, more powerful than a loco gay dude hopped up on weed, able to leap from tall buildings...if motivated.

Pooperman, who is really mild mannered Clark Bent, in the crowd of merry makers, searching for the mysterious gunman...who in reality turns out to be a gunwoman...Fineswine. :D

What a party pooper.

Wow, thank goodness The City took over it! I bet it's a lot safer now under the watchful eye of the Government....eh? *reads details* D'OH! :p

Waiting for the day.

Well, when the gays can take over all of the city of SF and force out the remaining straight people, the city will set a milestone and be the first in America to be crime free. After all, with no straight people, there will be no crime.

Yaknow what Gunpacker, thats the most bigoted comment I've heard on this forum in a long while. I dont appreciate the insinuation that gays are somehow anti gun. I'm gay, I post here. I'm a gun nut, as are thousands of other gays. Ever heard of the pink pistols?

SF thing is a POLITICAL thing not a sexuality thing. I'm deeply offended by the insinuation dude, its beyond uncool.

Handguns are not currently banned in San Francisco.

I heard drunk scantily clad women..... and im only 45 min away...darn I missed it.

This has nothing to do with gun control, homosexuals, or the gov't throwing a party.

It has to do with idiots with guns, knives, beer bottles, etc trying to ruin people's good time. Plain and simple,if we had less idiots this wouldnt happen. I'm pro-idiot control.

...except that the person mentioning drunk, scantily clad women seems to be finding that bit of info somewhere other than in the news story, since nowhere in there does it mention that. Mentions 'colorfully dressed characters', in a way that implies flamingly dramatic drag queens ala "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", and mentions a woman getting grazed in the neck with a bullet, but I think somebody was making some assumptions there.;)

Let's wait and see what info comes out as the Police look into it, and more witnesses come forward.

Kace...

Me thinks you become offended too easily and throw the "B" word around too freely.

The reports are too scanty to come to any conclusions at all. It could have been gang bangers. It could have been Adam and Jamie on a rampage. Who knows.

Yeah, because it's only the gay community in SF that supports looney anti-gun "safety" laws.

I have to say this one's run its course as well.

Please folks, play nice. If you've been here a while you know I'm not one to close a lot of threads (I think I've closed 3 in about as many years, until this morning.)

I don't know what it is - maybe it's that we're nearing another election and no-one thinks we'll come out better for it; maybe it's that we've got twice as many active users as we used to and they're used to other forums; maybe it's that the moderators have been slack and let things slide.

Whatever, it's gonna stop. Please folks, be nice to each other. We're all on the same side here. Namecalling doesn't help the tone of the discussion, and it decides nothing.

Disagree all you want - just do it in a respectful manner. Attack ideas, not people. And this includes public figures as well -- Democrats and the like aren't the sort of comments that encourage rational debate, and they're just the sort of thing that are likely to make open-minded folks who visit here to educate themselves decide that the biases we see in the media are correct.
