Fla. Gunman Puts Car 'Out of Its Misery'
http://story.news.yahoo.com/newstmpl=story&u=/ap/20050420/ap_on_fe_st/man_shoots_car&e=1

LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. - A man with car trouble is in trouble after shooting five rounds into the hood of his Chrysler "to put my car out of its misery."

John McGivney, 64, shot his 1994 LeBaron with a .380-caliber semiautomatic, Broward County sheriff's deputies said.

When the property manager at his apartment complex asked what he was doing, McGivney said, "I'm putting my car out of its misery." He tucked his gun in a pocket and went back inside.

He was arrested Friday on a misdemeanor charge of discharging a firearm in public. He posted $100 bail Saturday.

McGivney said the car has been giving him trouble for years and had "outlived its usefulness." He called the shooting "dumb" and worries he will be evicted. But he doesn't regret it.

"I think every guy in the universe has wanted to do it," McGivney told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "It was worth every damn minute in that jail."

I can think of some vending machines that need the same treatment. . .The two "Cash bandits" here at work

Using that .380 he did not put it out of its misery, he just severely wounded it. Probably a good thing because the old mopar will get an infection from its wounds, be in a good deal of pain, and then die of septicemia (sp?) That's what old mopar's deserve, as much pain as they have dealt. :D

Anyone else here see the scene in "October Sky" where the boys are shooting their contrary old car with a 22 rifle?

(It looked to me like a Marlin model 60)

Anyway ... McGivney should have known that you don't shoot a horse in the barnyard - you lead them out in the field or on a hill and shoot them.

Then he would have probably been charged with littering. Coyotes aren't going to eat much off of a car. :D

There was some obscure movie back in the '70's or '80's about two crooks on this wacky crime spree. They shoot their way through all kinds of robberies. One night they walk up to a Coke machine to get a couple of drinks. As they walk away, the machine thanks them. Startled one of the crooks turns around and shoots the machine numerous times. The other hardened criminal, who has been through all kinds of gunfights and committed all kinds of crimes; turns to the vending machine killer and with a look of total desperation...blurts out,"Now we're going to have to answer to the Coca-Cola Company!"

It was a few years after that, that I drove up to a closed service station to get a Coke out of the outside vending machine. It was one equipped with a speaker. I got my Coke and turned to walk away when that dadblasted thing said something on the order of,"Thank you for choosing Coke!"

I almost wet myself and then I did want to shoot it. In revenge. I'm glad those things never caught on. And those car alarms,"Stand back! Car protected by Viper!" Ever been tempted to retaliate? Anybody know of any reports of cars with talking alarms being shot?

Actually Byron,

That same line is also used in Dr. Strangelove, by a certain Col. Bat Guano when Col. Mandrake (Peter Sellers) orders him to shoot the Coke machine to get some spare change out of it.

Goofy movie lines we remember. :D

Speaking of talking cars,"Kit" from Night Rider,

Would not have stood for this crap ;) :p I bet Herby the love bug would have put up a fight also :neener: ....

"I gotta buckskin mare, and she.. uh.. she done broke 'er leg; s'we had to shoot 'er. [[audiences goes "awww..."]] Now she's gotta broken leg and a gunshot wound. I dunno what you're s'posta' shoot 'em fer, maybe it helps in the healin' process. If she's not better by th' end of the week, I'ma shoot 'er again." ~Larry the Cable Guy

1 shot stop - automobile

1 shot stop caliber - automobile

.45-70, steel core rounds

When you absolutely positively need to put your car out of it's (read your) misery.

Illegal, sure...and dangerous. But I tell ya, haven't we all felt that way at one point. The LeBaron wasn't known for reliability, that's for sure.
