I posted this on my 1911 forum, I know some of you don't own 1911's and its food for thought and discussion, maybe someone might purchase.

The owner of a company that sold firearm merchandise to both the Virginia Tech University and Northern Illinois University shooters announced Wednesday that he will sell his guns at cost for the next two weeks in hopes that "law-abiding" citizens will buy them to prevent similar tragedies.

His website for the guns (supposedly) at his cost. I'm not seeing a huge savings. Especially after FFL transfer fees. I see it more as a publicity stunt and a way to really piss off the anti's.

Looks like a publicity stunt, and a sad one at that. The last new gun I bought was a H&R Handi Rifle a month or so ago for right around $220. He's selling them for $215.

Keep in mind that there's an extremely small mark-up on guns. His selling that handi-rifle for $215 doesn't sound all that outrageous - in fact, it sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Looks like it's for real. 10% or more less than most discount internet dealers. He's got a Ruger that I just paid $439 for locally (Bud's price was $431) for $392.

not bad. I got my Glocks for only $17 above cost locally. I didn't realize that.

Ozark guns beat them for the Colt 70 SS, (I'm looking for the Blue)

but Guns at Cost beat everyone I could find for the Ruger Mark III Hunter SS

Well.... to be honest - once you figure in the S&H and FFL Fee, theres not a whole lot of savings.

It's a nice thought, but not exactly worth it.

Although that doesn't mean that SOME of them aren't worth it. I'm still browsing around at some rifles right now.

I can say for certain that at least some of those are definitely above dealer costs, unless he's buying his inventory off of Gunbroker or something. In fact, I'm not finding a single item on there that looks to actually be at dealer cost (except maybe the Barretts). Some of the rifles appear to be at least $100 over dealer.

Even if it's above dealer price, there's about $50 knocked off of my most recent purchase.

Oh well, I'm supporting the local dealer!

This would be an okay idea...if it were actually an honest one.

As it is, like someone else said, it's a sad publicity stunt.

No thanks, I don't want to buy a new car from your dealership "at cost"...oh wait, this kind of gimmick is being used to sell guns now?

And the part about him being "The Guy who sold gun-related items to the NIU and VT shooters" is pretty sick. I don't think he's guilty regarding those incidents, but he sure shouldn't be capitalizing on them like this either. :barf:

There's a lot of stuff on there, but I'm questioning whether those guns are in stock or not. CZ SP-01 ther is $584 there and $533 at buds SHIPPED.... if that' cost, they are paying too much and I know where I'd be buying from...

I have a creeping suspicious that "at cost" factors in his expenses, his overhead, his car payments...

Sleazy, slippery guy.

He's letting you backorder Ruger LCPs for under $260. That looks pretty good. If he's buying some of his inventory through distributors - undoubtedly he is with what he's offering - he may not be able to beat every other internet dealer on every gun in stock. Cherry pick the best deals and take advantage.

This irritates me. I'm one of those college students he's allegedly trying to protect, and I live in a crappy, low-rent area. I was harassed and followed on campus today and I have had to call the police three times in the past two weeks. I would really feel much safer with a home-defense gun, but even the cheapest guns are prohibitively expensive. I can't afford 300+ dollars for an AK or an AR, and I can't purchase a pistol at my age (because everyone knows that a Walther P22 is far more dangerous than a hunk of 7.62x39mm spitting Russian steel).

If he wants to help me protect myself, I want to see guns AT COST. He also apparently has nothing in stock. I see nothing cheaper than what I'd buy elsewhere.

On top of all this, he's more or less billing himself as "THE GUY" who sold Cho his gun. That's a slap in the face to gun owners right there, as he's insinuating that his gun was at least partially responsible for the actions of the VT shooter.

I want to see someone put their money where their mouth is. I know us students have a liberal reputation, but pretty much every other student at my college fully supports the right to keep and bear arms. We'd buy up if it was cheap enough to do so. We just (by and large) don't really have 300 bucks to drop on a rifle, as well as rising ammo costs...

See my post above. $300 rifles have virtually zero markup. You sell the $300 gun and make $5 to $10 to get a new shooter started, make a few bucks to keep the lights on by selling him or her a box of ammo and a sling, treat him or her right, and hopefully make a customer for life.

You have to cherry pick the high end, and subsequently high margin (relatively speaking), guns to get the best deals.

My respect for the guy increased a little bit when I heard him mentioned on the radio not too long ago. And it was about his giving a speech, not about his gun sale. He is definitely giving gun owners some pretty good press.

Good Lord, the inventory is damn near impossible to browse.

EDIT: OK, the rifle stuff isn't too bad, but the handguns are horrible. I can only narrow results by manufacturer and caliber?

I don't even know why I'm looking, I ain't got any money to spend right now. :)

This is so very true. I just picked up a Bersa Thunder and bought it from my local gun guy. I shopped this gun all over the net and while I found the gun cheaper through other sources, in the end, the savings wasn't worth it.

After having to pay the FFL transfer and shipping costs, I would have saved 10 - 20 bucks. Instead I bought it locally. It put money into the local economy and also solidified my relationship with my local dealer. He in turn gave me a discount on a couple mags and a gun case.

I will always shop locally if possible and the price spread isn't to bad.

Chris

I usually buy used guns. The prices are much better and a lot of times they aren't even shot or shot very little. People buy them, never shoot them and sell them. Probably one out of 10 guns I buy is new.
