Guns do not save or secure lives

Darren Seiber
Issue date: 3/26/07 Section: ViewPoint

It is often said that everything's bigger in Texas - and without the assistance of Academy Award worthy films such as "Debbie Does Dallas" - some may believe this saying to be nothing more than a myth. But for the Texans who don't quite measure up there is always another way to compensate: own a gun. Because we all know how Texans love their guns, right?

However, the truth of the matter is, that Texas gun laws are no less lax than that of other states. It seems to be a love, hunger, thirst and desire for guns that has swept throughout the entire country - and with fatal results.

An epidemic of intended crime prevention has proven to host a whole new genre of crime; one that's faster, easier and comes with a load of alibis. Now, now, a good American can never pass up a bargain.

Maybe that explains why 1,000 people die every day due to guns. Anti-gun control supporters will immediately attack that statement to say, and I only quote the ignorant, to not believe it, "Guns don't kill people. People kill people!" My, with such a mind set, every gun supporter should have a degree in philosophy. Maybe then they could articulate in such a way that the blame game just might work.

Sure, we can continue to blame guns for homicides, suicides, war deaths and freak accidents for as long as we like. But when other nations, such as Canada, reform gun laws only to see a 46 percent decrease in gun-related deaths, America might want to check its facts again. Not that our ego would ever allow any real admittance of having been in the wrong.

We are wrong because guns are wrong. They are deadly, unethical creations that do not save or secure any number of lives that could build a reliable statistic. Instead, there are mountains of statistics telling us otherwise.
Take, for instance, this statistic: for women, having a gun in the house increases the chances of being murdered by 172 percent. If that's not good enough, chew on this for a while: one study showed that people who attempt to use a gun in self-defense are four times as likely to die. Having a gun in the home does not make you safer. It is not an imaginary insurance policy.

I'm not sure any statistic could change the mind of someone set on owning a gun. No matter what is said in favor of gun control, it would seem that the Second Amendment has blinded us for too long. I suppose that 300 years ago, on the frontier, out in the West, and in the Appalachian Mountains, guns were necessary.

Today, in 2007, with very few buffalo to eat, bears to fight or Native Americans left to slaughter they seem a bit useless.

But never fear! Testosterone is here. He's the one behind it all, it would seem. America is fueled by the same male dominance that sees that laws regarding gun control are relaxed, if at all existent. No, there aren't any saloons full of dirty cowboys with spurs and iron belt buckles but the essence of masculinity still makes it smell like the Old West.

Of gun-related homicides, 90 percent occur amongst men. Every 30 hours in South Africa, a woman is shot to death by her partner. It's not hard to understand that if men make up the majority of gun owners, which they do, and men are far more impulsive and badly tempered than females, then deaths associated with guns is likely to be very evident. It's much easier to end an argument, unhappy life, child's crying, spousal cheating or a robbery with a simple click.

It's very rare that I insist that the government intervene in the lives of its citizens but in America, the leader of gun fatalities, something should have been done long ago. Our ambition, ego and greed have brought us this far. Undoubtedly, it will carry us to the end.

This paper will circulate for three short days. Each day, more people will die because of guns. By the time the next issue arrives, anywhere from three to four thousand more people will be dead. Not from heart attack, cancer or AIDS but from something that can be stopped but is instead ignored.
And for what reason? So that gun owners can feel more secure knowing that their families are safe, they may still enjoy the pointless sport of killing wild animals and their power is ensured.

The ultimate irony of this entire situation is that the United States currently tops the charts with $533 million made per year on gun exports, and the very people we go to war with are one in the same as those we helped arm in the first place.

Our stubborn ways will guide us in our growth. Yet, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. And when the time comes for that fall and America takes a bullet to the back of the skull, we'll wish that we had the luxury of a good old fashioned stabbing in the back. At least then we might have seen it coming.

What a pants load. Lets quote statistics from South Africa to ban guns in the US. Typical IANSA garbage. In the three days it took for that paper to circulate, 10,000 people were killed by thier own governments. And 5,479 people were saved in the US by the use, or mere display, of a firearm, in thwarting crime, according to Professor John Lott's figures, who I trust a HECK of a lot more than IANSA!

uhhhh....

"The number one killer amoung left handed, latino, red headed quasi-sexual transvestites ages 18 to 18.5679999992 is guns! BAN THEM! THEY ARE KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE!"

First off, this is the kind of crap I expect to come out of a college news paper. What the blazes does he start off talking about Texas for, only to end up in South Africa and then talking about the U.S. Arms business.

People act like guns are big business... I have yet to see that. You could take all of the gun companies in the world, merge them and I doubt that the company would have gross revenue half that of Microsoft or 1/10 of Walmart.

But for the Texans who don't quite measure up there is always another way to compensate: own a gun.
Who came up with this kind of crap? I am tired about hearing how I am "over compensating" or the like. How is it that I can get sued / fired for complementing a co-workers shoes, but they can tell me that I am "over compensating".... What kind of jerk would say that. Seriously, that is an extremely personal and devastating tactic that is just bantied about by an ignorant group of self rightious, man hating people.

I think more people should just act with outrage when that kind of thing is said to them. Seriously, act outraged and cease the conversation immeadiatly and contact HR or the like... Sue them for defamation... I dunno, but I am tired of hearing these crass sexually presumptive statements when it comes to me and my choice of hobbies (hunting, guns, fishing, boxing, my trucks)

:banghead:

...other nations, such as Canada, reform gun laws only to see a 46 percent decrease in gun-related deaths...
Who gives a damn? What about knife-related deaths or overall violent crime? I'd rather be shot than stabbed 20 times or raped. Campaigning against gun violence specifically is the strangest joke about these people.
It's very rare that I insist that the government intervene in the lives of its citizens...
Right, I'm sure it's a huge struggle for you. :)

Oh, and as far as statistics go: :barf: I've always hated them on both sides.

Oh yes, we have our idgets. In this neck of the woods, the worst of it comes from down Asheville NC way, but we've our fair share here to.

But really - look at the goofy kid trying to look all cool and tough in his school paper photo.. what can you really expect?

They don't call it "sophomoric" for no reason.

Maybe that explains why 1,000 people die every day due to guns.
I didn't realize we have 356,000 gun deaths every year. Maybe he is talking about world wide?
This is where I stopped reading.

Yeah, you should've told us up front that it was a stupid college kid. I would have been much less surprised and annoyed. :)

If it's related to a major college (which ETSU is in TN), it's not really Tennessee.

Oh youth.... there is a reason for the saying "young and dumb". Makes me start humming from the song, "We are the world, we are the children........"

Killings in Africa have nothing to do with firearm deaths here in the US. If and when there are 1,000 firearm deaths in the US per day, we have a lot more problems than guns. It is called WAR. I'd have to dig around, but I would be willing to bet that even during the civil war (our bloodiest war), there weren't an average of 1,000 deaths per day.

justin, i just clicked the link and got the article. doesn't look like anyone has responded yet either.

Did that sentence make any one else's head hurt?

Drizzt,

I wanted to post a big THANK YOU for this thread. Just this morning I was looking for an example of "typical" anti illogic to use in a debate and you provided absolutely PERFECT fodder for me.

The timing was perfect (even if the article about made my head implode)

for women, having a gun in the house increases the chances of being murdered by 172 percent...

First off I highly doubt that this number is even close to accurate. Not only that but its misleading when expressed as a percent.

Taking into account women who may have bought a gun because of a specific threat which would artificially increase the women gun owner to death ratio

I would like to see the actually statistic then take into account subtracting the number of deaths where the gun in the home was NOT the murder weapon.:fire:

What about the fact that the women may not have even been murdered AT HOME :banghead:

That's the most lies and damned lies I've seen told with statistics all week.

Take, for instance, this statistic: for women, having a gun in the house increases the chances of being murdered by 172 percent.

1/1000000 = 0.000001% x 172 = 0.000172% = HUGE CHANCE! Cite the original percentage. What a maroon.

But never fear! Testosterone is here.

Of gun-related homicides, 90 percent occur amongst men.

Of homicides/year, how many were gun-related?

Every 30 hours in South Africa, a woman is shot to death by her partner.

No word yet on whether any of these women were gay.

HA!

He's right, it is much easier to end a robbery with a gun:banghead: . What a freakin' limp noodle for wishing it to continue. I heard once that petro chemicals are helping reduce testosterone to dangerously low levels in many men, leading to sterility and other complications. No wonder why these losers usually come FROM THE CITY

I like "guns increase a woman's chance of murder 172%"
WOW, 172%! 300+ million guns, 80 million homes with guns. Then there should be roughly 80 million women murdered being that the chances if it happening are 172%.:what: In 3-4 years we will run out of women.

Well I jumped through the hoops to post a comment.

I posted the following:
"All statistical information used in this article can be found at http://www.iansa.org."

You should have put that line first, it would have saved me the time of reading that nice collection of lies, half truths and just plain incorrect information.

Nothing honest, unbiased or even accurate about the source. Might as well get information on crime in the black community from the KKK's web site.

After posting I get the following; The site administrator may need to approve your comment before it is displayed. So lets see if my comments show up (I bet not).
