Having been to the Dominican Republic it was interesting and somewhat un-nerving to see casually dress guys with riot type shotguns sitting on folding chairs in front of businesses. Was told that the people with the shotguns and pistols were guards there to fight off bandits. Seemed to be guns in open sight all over the capital of Santo Domingo being brandished by civilians. The business establishments were places such as Fried Chicken emporiums, woman's clothing boutiques and retail shoe stores among many others.
After two days in Santo Domingo, I was introduced to the President of the Country. Had the sharp feeling in the Dominican Republic, that the majority of people, being black, could not afford a firearm if even allowed to own one. Like most of the Caribbean and Latin America, the whiter you are, the better your lot in society. As a white guy I did get special and much better treatment being invited to "upper class" Dominican Republic social events. Have no doubt that if I lived there, I'd be able to legally buy and own pretty much any type of firearm desired. There are probably strict laws on the books regarding firearms in the Dominican Republic but it no doubt depends upon who's got the guns. At least that's my direct impression.
