Guns of "Payback"

I just watched the movie "Payback" with Mel Gibson in it today. I was wondering about the part near the end where the Asians pull up in a Suburban and shoot up the taxi Mel Gibson is sitting in. The two submachine guns they had looked really old. Like WWII era. The pistols didn't look much newer either. Can anyone ID those weapons?

You mean the M-3A1 "Grease Guns"?

Do not know if the old Beretta M-92 was available in the US when this movie was supposed to take place, but Mel Gibson used one, along with what appears to be a 6" S&W model 19 sporting Hogue wood grips.

I think.

Been a few years since I saw that one.

The book is set '50s or '60s IIRC.

I got a kinda retro '70-ish feel from the film, the way it was shot/lit etc, but I don't think it was in a time other than relatively modern.

I believe the original movie made from the novel The Hunter starred Lee Marvin sometime in the late 60's and was called Point Blank. Marvin carried several handguns, the only one I can recall was a .45, and there was a lot less violence and a lot more artsy acting and directing. Think John Boorman was the director but am too lazy to google the thing.

The original series of stories the movie is from are the "Parker" books by Richard Stark. Kinda noirish.

They changed the name to "Porter" for some reason in the movie.

All the phones are rotary, that is a visual clue.

Yeah, but the clothing of the minor actors indicated modern. And don't forget there was a car phone (ancient one though).

I seem to recall that most of the cars were late model, too. But from the 1980's.

The gun choices struck me as odd, but interesting. In the scene with the Grease Gun, one of the characters is carrying a VP70, as I recall.

And at the meeting where Porter shoots the mafia guy while on the phone with his boss, I think he used a P7.

The cinematography seemed very 1970's, but I figured it was just shot to have that sort of gritty feel that a lot of cop/criminal movies from that time had.

You know, that was my first though too. That's why they seemed out of place in a movie set in the 60s or 70s.
