Guns owned is almost 1:1 ratio of the U.S. Population

I guess the real question is how many of those firearms are tastefully stashed away for a rainy day.

Kinda like Ireland. guns are illigal, but somehow they have millions of them burried in select locations.
 
This story is exactly why I buy new whenever I can. Whether we like it or not the driving force behind most politics is money. Buying new means that your money is going directly to increase the industry numbers, and America loves industry. Think how much easier would it be for the anti's to push through legistation if they had hard numbers showing that the firearms industry was shrinking - giving "proof" that "Americans don't want to buy guns anyway...." When the production numbers are up, revenue is up, profits are up - it gets in the news, and in a manner which can't be immediately used as evidence that the majority are opposed to firearms ownership.
