I'm selling something on www.gunsamerica.com for the first time. I just put the gun up for sale Sunday (last night) and already received what I believe to be a suspicious email. If you folks a agree that it is suspicious (which I suspect you willl) what do I do? I'm assuming I just ignore it. I'm curious what exactly the person was hoping to accomplish. Also, one would think that an Australian would know how to spell Australia. Is this common?

Here is the email. I substituted the sellers first name with Snoopy.

Tasmania Ave?

Well, cultural language differences aside, I think he needs a basic grammar lesson. It does look a little odd...

yeah, something isn't right here. guys has a "@NYC" emial yet lives in Australia? Right there there probelms as it would require more paperwork than justa simple FFL transfer if it's even legal in Aus. Secondly, regardless of where he is, ANY out of state transfer requires a FFL on the reciever's end.
I'd either tell Snoopy it's been sold or just completely ignore it all together. Possibly even alert someone with a federal badge about this. Have heard that many of the illegal guns in the NYC area come from CT and MA through "runners". This could be of interest to those trying to stop them.

Yup

A popular scam over the last year with several angles. Sending fake MO etc for too much and saying it's a mistake, please return the difference before we go further etc.
CT

I'd report the incident, along with copies of the e-mail, to Gunsamerica, and ask them. If it's the scam I think it is, they'll be aware of it, and will be able to advise you.

This is a common scam that I have seen word for word on many different websites that sell things. I have read in the paper that most of these scams are being run by criminal rings in Russia, Nigeria or Romania. Identity theft is one of the main goals, and any 'cheque' you receive is bound to be fraudulent.

It is most definately a scam. I received an almost identical email about an item i was selling on a truck forum.

If you want to have some fun send them some really goofed up information. Then see if they ever try to mail anything. I live in a fairly small town. I can use just about any address and my mail willl still get to me so I sometimes make up an address and really screw with these scammers.

Just a scam, but if you want to have fun then tell him you have to have info on his shipping agent.

Yeah, this one's a scam for sure. I'd think even the most illiterate, bonafide buyer would be able to compose a more intelligible email than the one you received.

Danger

Danger, Will Robinson, Danger.

Looks suspicious as most or all transactions are from FFL to FFL...shipped.

Mention it to the folks at GunsAmerica...they have been stand up with my transactions and when I had issues with a couple of dealers.

I would think GA would be VERY interested in this SCAM message...

Good luck in your sale though... :)

Send him the mailing address for your local ATF office and see if he sends the bogus cashier's check to them. :neener:

Creepy. Definitely a foreigner, based on the alien spelling of "Cheque" as opposed to "check". Most likely from a european country, or a former french or engilsh colonial state.

Do not pursue further communications.

Sounds to me like he wants to get your address. He can then burgle you while you are gone or a home invasion. Tell him you accept only PayPal originated through a US Bank and see if that turns him off. He already has your email address which would also be your PayPal account so you aren't giving him anything he doesn't already have.

had a car for sale on the 'net about three years back

and had this dude from Nigeria try to scam me. "I have a business associate in the USA who owes me money. He will send you a cashier's check for $4300, you may deposit it and send me the balance via Western Union..." I decided to have some fun, said, yeah, send it. He sent it FEDEX (came from Nigeria, hmmm guess his business associate moved?) looked real as hell, drawn on US Bank (fortunately I was banking with them at the time). Took it to the branch and talked with the branch manger about my suspicions. She said it would cost me $8 to find out (bounced check fee, if in fact it bounced). By this time Nigeria dude is emailing me 3x per day asking where his wire transfer is. Told him, as soon as the check clears, we're there :)
At this point he's having a conniption, saying a) there's no need for the check to clear, IT'S A CASHIER'S CHECK!! and b) oh-by-the-way, his wife is dying of cancer, I'm his only hope and-oh-please-send-the-money-right-away!!!
Well, you can probably figure out the rest of the story. "Somebody" never got a car or a check, and "somebody" got billed $8. Pretty cheap entertainment, and I sent everything I had to the bank and to the FBI, but as he's out of the country, not a lot they can do.
If I had it to do all over again, I probably would forego the entertainment and deprive a bad guy of my identity, address, etc...

Update. Just got this email from him. I'm not hiding the name anymore as it is obviously a scam. Keep in mind he seems to be answering an automated email generated by GA. Aye chiuaua.

Yeppers it's a scam all right.

My brother received the near exact message when he was selling some car parts and rare Micro-Trains on e-Bay.

Since this involves firearms I'd report it to the authorities.
I'd hate to see this guy get busted and have them confiscate his computer containing several e-mails to you. They might wonder what's what.
