GunsAmerica Scammer?

I had an interesting situation when one of these overseas guys tried to sell me a submarine a few years ago. But he bailed when I pressed for lots of mechanical/system details he couldn't provide! Would have been a fun thing to have, but the neighborhood association probably would have nailed me on it. :neener:

I'm not sure that the BATFe would be interested in a crook doing something illegal involving guns. I think that they're only interested in catching honest people who do something unsuspecting, such as putting your gun in a glove box while visiting a Post Office.

Maybe it should be brought to the attention of the Border Patrol, since after all, it's apparently got nothing else to do.

I get the very same emails concerning horses I have for sale. I used to forward them on to the proper authorities. But that got tiresome, so now I just bounce them back to the sender. Let them read their own mail for a change.

One of my neighbors is LE. We're really just acquaintences, but our kids play together, etc.

I gave him a call last night and told him about the email. He said I shouldn't do business with the person (obviously). He also said that there's really no point in reporting it, either. Until I actually deal with the guy, exchange money or guns, bounce a check, etc, no crime has been committed, and there's nothing to report.

He said that even if I did get scammed by this guy, it is unlikely that local or federal authorities would devote any time or resources to the case, as in the end it will most likely be a foreign national with extremely limited exposure to US law.

Just a heads-up to everyone in response to an earlier post.

Even if you wait for the check to "clear", it doesn't do you any good. It can "clear" your local bank, they put the money in your account. Then, several weeks later the check makes it back to the alleged originating bank which disavows it as being fake, they refuse to settle up with your bank. Your bank then takes the money out of your account.

All of this can happen 2-6 weeks after you deposit the check, so waiting a week or two isn't going to do you any good.

These scammers use the clearinghouse delay to their advantage for just this reason.
