Mauser: 9.3X62mm Mauser. Common enough, good selection of ammo. Packs a lot of power into a reasonable package, fits in the original magazine if needs be, and is a Mauser cartridge for a Mauser rifle. Probably good for taking on any big game animal in North America.

Remington 700: 6.5mmX284 Norma. Tremendous long range accuracy potential, zippy ballistics, flat shooting, and the ability to go from exploding prairie dogs to whacking deer and even elk with the right bullets.

1903 Springfield: .270 Winchester, or .280 Remington. Both are good all around cartridges with a lot of potential for reloaders. Both are great for hunting, shoot flat, and have a wide selection of bullets available.

this is very exciting! just curious if u are attending Montgomery Community Coll. or Piedmont Community Coll. here in NC? can't wait for the pics and finished products BTW!...good luck and Godspeed!.....:D:D:D

JG727--When are you getting out of School? In Tallahasse, FL we have one gunsmith. He is a friend of mine I've known for 30 years. Like me, he is getting on in years and probably interested in selling his business. He is only open 3 days a week and can't stay up with the demand. His shop is the authorized Remington service place for this area and also a Master Kimber dealer. If someone operated this business on a 5 or 6 day a week basis and had a good front of the store person and spent more time doing the actual repair work it would be very rewarding financially. Shop name is simply "W.R. Alexander, Gunsmith". You might want to look him up and give him a call.

aka108,
I just started in August. It is a 2 year, 6 semester program. I will receive an Associates in Applied Sciences.
I really like the Tallahassee area. My uncle lives in Monticello, and is the one who set me upon this path. There is a retired engineer that does gunsmithing as a hobby. He lives north on Monticello on US 19. Nicest fellow I've ever met, and has an amazing set up. He was making his own custom revolver cylinders when I visited. And that, my friends, is no easy task. He was rechambering black powder cap and ball revolvers for black powder metallic cartridges. And before anyone protests about ruining antiques, none were particularly rare. Plus he does his own rust bluing, leather work, makes and repairs his machinery. A little part of my soul went to hell, because I was doing a whole lot of coveting.

Being from the Tampa Bay area originally, I will probably end up there (in the long run, as in 20+ years down the line.) We have family history there going back to the 1830's, and I'm the last male to pass on the family name.

One of my original plans was to work for, and eventually buy out, an established gunsmith. Nothing about it is a bad idea. You will have an established costumer base, years of additional hands on experience, paid off machinery, a location, the appropriate ATF licences, a community presence, and most importantly, a mentor. Still seems like a great idea.

Cappaletti, I am currently attending Montgomery Community College. The program is excellent, and the instructors superb.

I have to say that I was initially very worried. This area of NC is very poor, and despite the people being so friendly, I was having problems making friends my age. Mostly from a lack of encounters with people my age. By the end of the 1st week of classes I had made at least 3 new close, hopefully lifelong friends. The other students in the program are extremely nice.

Why not leave the Mauser in 8mm? Great hunting round. I bought 5 horrible 98K's for 200 bucks. Barrel were sewer pipes and the stocks were cracked and in general they looked like hell. I was able to purchase 6 shiney and sharp 8mm take off barrels with sights for a total of 100 bucks. Put the new barrels on the actions, repaired the cracks in the stocks and cut the stock right behind the rear barrel band and rounded it off.
Refinished the stocks and ended up with a not too bad looking field rifle with about 70bucks invested in each. Kept one for myself and sold the others for 150 bucks each. Still have one nice 8mm bbl for possible future use. I like the original Mauser iron sights which most people don't seem to care for.
