I have an H&K Benelli M1 Super 90. It has a Surefire forend, sidesaddle, and has the stock/pistol grip attached. It will NOT cycle 2 3/4 inch shot shells. I have yet to try 3in whihc is what I've heard it will cycle reliably. Has anyone had trouble firing 2 3/4 shotshels in this shotgun? It will ccle slugs and 00,000 buck in 2 3/4 but not shotshells. thanks in advance!

I have one . They don't like light loads so mine would just occasionally hang up on 2 3/4" heavy target and fairly often on light target. After modification it's reliable with heavy target and only occassionaly hangs up on light target ...Benelli is said to be a gun that doesn't like add ons , saddles , lights etc. Does it function without the add ons ??

Sniper X,

My M1S90 runs on Walmart 1 1/8 cheapy loads and FED red recoil buck. A couple of ideas.

1. When was the last time it was thoroughly cleaned to include the recoil tube/spring? (PM me with an Email address, and I'll send you the Benelli directions on how to break down the tube)

2. Check the side saddle tightness, they can be over tightened to the point they pinch the aluminum receiver. Ride the bolt forward with your hand and see if it hits any "tight" spots.

3. I've got two Benelli's the M1S90 and a SBE. From my experience they like to be run with the rails wet with oil.

4. I've read that with the pistol grip stock the gun "can" be heal tightly enough for the stock to flex the recoil tube to the point it will hang up. This has not been my experience at all, but one of the smiths that works on Benelli's for 3-Gun seems to think it happens.

The Inertia Recoil system of the Benelli shotguns require a certain amount of recoil (more specifically, reward velocity of the gun in the rearward direction) to operate correctly. When you add mass to the gun by attaching side saddles, light systems, and any other accouterments that directly bolt onto the gun, you reduce the gun's rearward velocity under recoil. This will cause malfunctions.

If you would like to keep those attachments on, you'll need to use heavier loads through the gun. If you like lighter loads, you have to dump some, if not all, of those add-ons.

How many rounds through it?

Had a buddy that had one and got rid of it after less than 2 boxes of shells. My reccommendation to him was to shoot it a few hundred times and if was still giving him problems, then we might need to look at tweaking it. Alas, he is of the "Instant Gratification" type so he traded it in on an 11-87. So, all that yakkin' and all I says is "Shoot the snot out of it, clean the snot out of it, and enjoy the snot out of it":D

If you want your gun to run with all that stuff hanging on it you are going to have to use warm ammo or lighten the bolt carrier.

As noted above, PG Stocks can also give fits. They may have a high CDI factor, but do nothing but make the gun feel like it kicks more by putting a lot of recoil directly into your hand.

What hksw said, this is a common problem with the Bennelli when folks hang all the extra stuff on it.Normally its less of a problem when running slugs and buckshot loads.Light bird shot loads, cheap "promo" loads do not have enough ooomf to cycle the action.I took the Sure-Fire off my M1S90 only because I was killing it and it would stop working after running slug/buckshot loads during training.
I have no problems running full power hunting bird shot loads with the Sidesaddle on.Some folks report that the Sidesaddle can "egg" out the receiver pin holes after heavy use.

Bottom line, don't run the cheap Wally world 200 pack type stuff if you want 100% reliability.Benelli did make a a different recoil spring for light loads,I don't know if this is still offered.

Brownell's had a light spring for the Benelli but it was expensive.

my friend has an M1 SBS 14" factory gun and it will not cycle tactical buckshot loads. it prefers the full recoil load.

Yes, please email the infor at [email protected] and also anyone include any info about the srping as I want to use the gun in 3 gun so if I could shoot 2 3.4 #7s that would be great as that is the heaviest load we can shoot in 3 gun where I compete. Thanks!

I found the light load spring at Brownells only 13 bucks so I'm going to order one today. But I would like the instructions on taking it totally apart so I can give it a deep cleaning. It was purchased used with no manual. I talked to the guy who owned it and he said he never fired anything but 00buck and slugs thru it and never had a falure to feed.

I broke in Benelli Tactical M1S90 with around 100 rounds of buckshot and 300 rounds of #8 Shot. All ammo was 2 3/4 shells. Its never had a hiccup.

My recent M1 Field was broken in with 2 boxes of steel shot, a handful of 00 buck rounds and 4 boxes of #8 2 3/4" shells.

I would suggest a good cleaning before swapping out recoil springs.

If you have time cycle the bolt for about 15-20 minutes and see if it helps you the next time out. Also oil the pivot pin for the shell lifter.

I did that and it acts no differently. With that stuff on it, which I must say is made for th4e H&K Benelli, not just cheapo universal crap, is on every H&K I see and they are working fine. I think mine is dirty as it sat in my gun (favorite) shop for almost a year before I bought it. It went from $1000.00 to $700.00 and I bought it. I had actually shot one with the exact surefire forend, and sidesaddle with #7s and even in 2 3/4 in I never had a missfeed, in fact I won the shotgun portion of that 3 gun competition that day...with someone elses shotgun! I had a tricked out 870 which I sold to buy this thing...I really want to get it shooting! Ill try the instructions, tear it down and give it some "funky love" and go from there!

The lighter recoil spring can cause the bolt/carrier to not close all the way.

A lighter recoil spring is not a cure. It can cause a few other problems.

A lighter carrier and a lot of internal polishing goes a long way to fixing this.

For shooting 3-gun, you need your gun to run 100% with 3 dram loads and low recoil buck/slug.
