It's offical.

According to the H&K USA website.

H&K will be producing the MR556 (HK-416) and MR762 (HK-417) for the US civilian market.

The rifles will be produced at H&K's new manufacturing facility in Newington, New Hampshire.

Release date is late Q4 2009. Unknown MSRP for either rifles.

Note: The MR556 will not be compatible with standard AR lower/upper recievers.
H&K USA said:
To conform to German export regulations, certain design changes made in the MR556 prevents the rifle's upper receiver from being used on other AR-style firearms.

That is unfortunate and makes it much less desirable to me. It would be interesting to know what they will sell for. They wont be cheap I'm sure.

Feedback From H&K

I sent them an email asking when the MR556 & MR762 will be available ...

Response:

Projected release date is Jun/July 2010.

Thank you

(The rumors are they will be priced around 3K.)

No matter what you think of the company or the products, posts such as the above do little more than insite fierce threads about the respective merits/flaws of companies and their products. Counterproductive, in my mind...

So they finally realized they were missing out on a lot of business with "those who suck and must be hated".

I don't get it:

And yet:

So they are to be made in the USA, to be sold in the USA, but still must conform with German export regulations?

If that is the case it is a stupid move...oh well, no big deal for me...the cartridge offerings are very limited and that is the only thing that attracts me to the AR platform to begin with.

:)

$2400?! I picked up my Sig 556 with quad rail for 1500. Heck, for 3000 you could get one of those brand new SCAR-Ls, and I'd expect that price to drop considerably within a year or two.

Glad you have an opinion, but as an owner of multiple HK products I feel qualified to I feel qualified to comment.

And inquiring minds would like to understand why we shouldn't discuss the merits of various gun companies on a gun related forum?

Fixed it for ya :)

Do many think that H&K will seriously charge over $2000 for this rifle, and if so will anyone buy them at that price? I mean, I paid 2 grand for a NM M1A at the height of the Obama panic, no way I'd pay over 2 grand for a modified AR now. Besides, the 3 biggest pluses of the SCAR I've heard is the uni-rail, the ability to change barrels, and the retractable folding buttstock (which is huge for getting in and out of Humvees, LMTVs, etc.). The H&K doesn't have those pluses over a DI AR. Heck, you can get a Sig 556 (with gas piston, retractable folding buttstock, and a uni-rail of sorts) for $1500 or less these days.

I don't know about the masses, but my opinion is yes (and probably about $3k) and there are still a few nuts around.
