Hello friends and neighbors // I'm looking for DOM estimates on SN D238XX.

This H&R appears as new with the slightest turn line visible under magnification.

No Model number is shown on the revolver.
It is a .22lr,2",9 shot, Large Frame Top Break.

The SN is repeated under the rear sight and on the left side under the grip, without the D prefix.

There are two Pat. numbers, 1904730 and 2034632, one over the other on the cylinder.

There is a 1 stamped inside the grip.

Chambers 1,9 and 8 are stamped on the cylinder and the ejector.

On the top strap it reads : H&R arms co.
Woscester Mass. USA

On the left side of the barrel: NEW DEFENDER

On the right side of the barrel: 22 long rifle ctg.

The info I have found indicates the serial numbers for the 299 might match those of the model 999. Production years for the 999 are 1932-1952 and those of the 299 are 1935-1939.

By 1939 SNs of the model 999 reached 89761 (I do not know if this indicates the beginning or the end of 1939.) This averages out from 1932-1939 at 12,823 per year but I doubt if they made the same amount each year.

Would the model 299, beginning production in 1935 have started at SN 1 or with the current SN run of the model 999?
It seems to me the reason SNs would run together is so they would not have to reconfigure the stamp. If this is true the model 299 SN could start anywhere. OTOH if this is the way it was done, is it possible, they only made +/- 23,800 model 999s from 1932-1935 or even later?

Thanks for any input, content

//////The Model 299 New Defender ( a work of art to me) makes me wonder why H&R came to be considered a second tier firearm manuf.,, it is much nicer than my H&R " Side Kick" made years later.
