Greetings;

I'm new to the forum so I hope this gets to the right place. I have an H&R 929 22lr revolver. I bought it new many years ago but have shot it very little and it is in excellent condition. However, the single action mode no longer is operable. It still works fine in double action. I suspect it is my fault as I was trying the fit of some new, slightly larger grips which didn't work and after I reinstalled the original grips the single action mode would no longer work. I think something probably fell out that operated the single action mode and I didn't notice it. Nothing seems to be broken up in the gun as far as I can tell. I don't hear anything rattling, etc. It just will no longer work in the single action mode.

My question is this: Can anyone enlighten me on what part is needed to operate the single action mode? I have a schematic of the gun and I can get parts at www.gunpartscorp.com but I don't know exactly what I need. Thanks for your help and advise in advance.

I have one that did the same thing, intermittently firing. Turned out a little plastic shoe on the end of the rod in the middle of the coiled hammer spring (probably slaughtering the names of all these parts) had broken and needed replaced. It's is what transfers the force of the hammer spring to the hammer. The revolver can still be operated even if it's cracked or broken, but if it's busted you lose enough of that force transfer that it will no longer fire reliably. I never bought a replacement shoe because I have plans to have a machinist make one out of something less suspectable to breakage than a cheap plastic piece. All the gun parts have been in a plastic ziplock bag for a couple years now. :(

Read this to start with. This is what I did with mine except mine is a 949 not a 922.

TobiasJ,
Before you do anything take the grips back off and center the recoil spring assy in the frame so it isn't rubbing on the side of the grip, then try it with grips off. If it works ok then put the grips back on and try shooting it.
If not, pull the spring assy out and see if the plastic shoe is broken. 949 mainspring.jpg The end that is broken off on mine rides on the hammer assy.
It appeared to work correctly in double action and single but was harder to cock. It would only fire about 2 out of 9 rounds at a time.
I expect the shoe on your may have broke.
There are more than one design for these, the original design, and the plastic design shown here, are both obsolete and out of stock for mine.

The steel one recoil spring of 949.jpg is all that is available for most of the H&Rs and the only one you want anyways.
They plastic one will get brittle with age and just break again. If yours is broken than call Numrich's and order part # 276950E for the 929.
The steel replacement part. $30.47 with $8.00 shipping.
It is a new coil spring assy made out of all steel.
I would recommend buying one anyways and I used the part over that sat in the recess at the bottom end of the grip from my original assy. My wife had to help me swap the steel plate for the machined part and put the pin back in it.
Needed more than two hands, that spring is stiff. I put in vice and used side cutter to push the spring down so wife could pull the pin and swap the part.
Put the pin back in and leave the pin in it to keep the spring compressed until you get it in place in the grip frame. Then pull the pin and discard it. It's just a piece of hard wire. Note the direction the bottom piece goes in. Key # 22 in schematic below and notice how the shoe goes in.

This is the most common problem with these revolvers.
I had my new part from Numrich's in two days, ordered it on a Saturday and it was here on the following Monday.

@captain awesome , what model do you have. I'll look up the part # for the steel one for you to see if it's in stock.

Thanks Tightgroup Tiger, I didn't know they made a steel replacement. Mine is the 929, so the same part tobiasj needs. I just ordered it. I am really glad I saw this thread! That little 22 revolver is awesome, and amazingly accurate even with cheap garbage ammo. It will be good to be able to fire it again. My kids loved it.

That little plastic piece wasn’t meant to last long. I made a repair on my dad’s 929 years ago by “casting” a block on it with JB Weld and “machining” it with a Dremel. It worked better than it had any right to. By that, I mean it held back most of the time on the two range trips before we bought the proper replacement part.

It's irritating H&R would do something like that, particularly on a high stress part such as this. At least the metal replacement is available.

Good luck to you. I can't test mine until I get the cast off my foot and I can get to the shooting range.
I hope it's ok, It feels completely different. Did you have any trouble getting your parts and pins back in the frame?

It wasn't terribly difficult. Dealing with the trigger return, sear, and cylinder stop springs was a bit of a pain making sure they are correctly in place, The trigger return spring slipped out of place without my notice the first time and had to go back and do it again, I could tell something was off with the trigger pull before I got it all the way back together, but aside from that it was uneventful. It was Just small parts being finessed into place by large callused fingers.
