Bought a Sportsman today. Almost 100%. Anybody hep to serial #'s/dates on these? Mines AJ745XX. Usual crapo pic attached.

Some unsolicited advise. Place some thread lock compound on the small screws that hold the rear sight in place. Not that the 22 recoils so much, but they will work loose and you will have to send to Numrich for an inexpensive replacement. Just a nuisance. Oh, yea, and I have had the extractor loosen on it's threaded pin and raised enough off of the cylinder to cause binding that prevented closing it shut when reloading.
Simply tighten that rod that holds the extractor by hand occasionaly.
That is the same pistol that the famous elderly woman held that burglar at gun point with, recently, until the police arrived and took him into custody.

Thanks for info and comments. I've only owned the gun for about 6 hrs.. Further examination reveals that with the hammer fully down the FP protrudes thru the breach face. So that when loaded the hammer would rest on cartridge rim. However there is a hammer position about 3/32" back that pulls the FP flush with the breach face. This I would assume is the "safe" position for the loaded gun.
I bought this gun for $229 marked down from $369 at a Cabelas 1.5 miles from my house. It's been pouring rain (like 7 inches or more) since Friday. I don't have raincoat, and I was bored and determined to go to Cabelas as I missed a gun show today do to local flooding / impassable roads. Took a plastic garbage bag, poked holes in it, and wore it like a rain coat for the trip. Nobody took notice at the store as I removed it in the lobby. I bought the gun, redoned my bag and headed out to my van. Two massive front loaders were shoring up the birm that fronts the nearby river. Cabelas closed about 2 hours later when the water topped the birm. The phone rang here and a canned message from the Police dept. announced I was supposed to evacuate. Fat chance. I picked up all the stuff in the basement though. Well a lot of it anyway.

Mine turned out to be a first year model (1932) and was the 986th one made...it does not say "Sportsman 999" on it, because the 1st year of production H&R only made the double action model, but when they started making the SA model they called the SA the 199 and the DA the 999.
Anyways, I have fired it, and though the trigger is really rough in DA, the gun is pretty accurate in SA.

I had a pre-999 given to me,but the cylinder pin is worn, to the point it doesn't lock up tight.Anyone know where to get parts,and if not,will 999 parts fit?

My Battalion Commander and I were talking about guns, hunting and fishing during our last tour to Iraq. His grandfather had an H&R 999 that was lost when divorce struck his parents and he never saw it again. After redeployment, I found a real nice one on Gunbroker and was able to snag it. My counterpart had a nice display case made and we presented it to him at his farewell right before he changed commmand and moved on. Typically a very non-emotional guy, he broke down when he was presented with it. Now, I need to find another one for myself

Hey, all! I don't even know if this is the right thread to post in, but oh well, theres a multitude of thread pertaining to the H&R Sportsman Model 999.
Anyways I inherited my grandfathers 999, and i want to shoot it, but I also want it to be in prime functioning condition, which it pretty much is. Except that the break action is loose when its closed. Basically the part where the rear sight sits (that already fell out) that closes on the frame isn't ROCK tight, and so the whole barrel can move up and down a little bit. I'm almost positive this isn't normal for break actions, as just that little bit of movement would ruin your shooting. I've been searching around the internet for any other cases of this for reference or at least a start for addressing the problem, with no luck so far.
So I guess my question is, any suggestions or should I just except that its the way it is and probably too difficult, or too expensive?

When my Pop passed on almost 4 years ago, he left me his H&R 999 revolver. I'm not sure, but don't think he'd shot it much, still very tight. What a shooter though, nice gun, still wishing he had it, then we'd still be shooting.
