I can get a Handi-Rifle in a 45/70 Govt caliber at a discount price of $265 after tax.

1. what kind of "big game" could I take on with this?

With decent shot placement, anything on the continent.

Might not want to use a single-shot for some of the more dangerous beasts, but a stout .45-70 is a powerful round.

Of course, in a light weight gun, a stoutly loaded .45-70 will make quite an impression on the shooter, too.

...anything on the continent.

I'd imagine the western hemisphere would be completely huntable with a .45-70. For that matter, most anything on Earth. The only exceptions would be a handful of land animals few of us will ever have the privilege of hunting.

$265, tax included, sounds like a good price. If you look hard enough, you'll probably be able to save a couple dozen dollars, but for brand new, that price is right.

That's about the going cost in my neck of the woods. I have HandiRifles in 308 and such, and they're not bad at all in recoil. I dunno if I'd want to shoot too many stompin' 45/70 loads thru one, at least from the bench..
