Huntsville Alabama - Concealed Carry Weapon CCW - Handgun Self Defense class review - Kick Ass range session available!!!

I recently completed the CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) course offered by Cameron Bucy of Self Defense Solutions (SDS) in Huntsville, Alabama. It teaches real-world gun fighting tactics and techniques that every legally armed citizen should know and practice. The range session that follows the morning classroom session, will knock your socks off!!! It starts with evaluation of your skill level; practice drills, some hands on learning of the techniques discussed in the classroom, and then moves into some intense scenario drills you might encounter in the real world. From parking lots to public events and establishments; you get to hone your skills placing combat accurate shots, while avoiding hitting the innocents who might be close by. Mr. Bucy utilizes moving targets, barricades, multiple targets & scenarios in this course. The class is taught on a private range with lots of room to run & gun. You will get to practice what, up until now, most of us have only read about in books. He keeps his class small (no more than 4 or 5 max), so you get better personal instruction. He also offers the option of private sessions. Novice to advanced, Mr. Bucy adjusts the course to fit your level of skill. This guy does not hold back on info and He doesn’t waste time on things you obviously know (after he evaluates your skill level). His goal is to teach you the skills needed to fight, survive, and make it home safe at the end of the day. Safety is his #1 consideration, and I never felt unsure or worried. Overall, this was a very enjoyable, class that covers very serious subject matter. He offers a whole range of firearms training, from basic to tactical levels. I’m currently taking a Combative Hands class he offers, that really compliments the firearms training I’m taking. He will design a course for you if you don’t see what you want or need. You can check out their website for more info: http://www.selfdefensesolutions.net/ He is very good at returning emails & phone calls, and his prices are reasonable!!! I’m recommending this to every “gunny” I know, not only for the valuable info & techniques you’ll learn in this class, but also for the kick-ass range session that comes with it! I want to do this one again! A+++

Al,
I’ve taken the Basic and Personal Defense Classes (combo class) and also a Night Shooting class with this same instructor. All those classes were very good. The Personal Defense class taught point shooting, making fast, combat accurate shots, close quarter shooting, targets moving toward you, and multiple targets at different distances (learning to judge where you need to use point shoot, front site, or all 3 sights, and how fast you could shoot for accurate shots). It also covered speed reloads, one hand and weak hand shooting, along with BUG (back up guns or other weapons such as knives).
Comparatively the CCW class touch on all those topics but also covered issues to consider when carrying concealed (everything from legal issues to seasonal options, profiling, printing, options to not pulling your weapon, etc.). The range session for CCW had scenario drills that included sitting in a restaurant (your back to the action) when 2 armed men came in (you did not know in advance where the bad guys were, they placed the targets while you had your back to them); you had to get up, engage the 2 assailants and avoid hitting the other customers that were in the room. Also, scenarios engaging in parking lots with the bad guys hiding behind a car, & you moved between concealment and barricades for cover- (run & gun) to take him out. Shooting to the rear and side as you were running for cover, and Shooting from the prone position (lying on the ground) in case you were knocked down or fell. And shooting while an unarmed person was trying to pull you away or keep you from shooting. Other stuff too that I can’t recall right now, but it was an intense stress fire session that I really enjoyed. I made a lot of stooopid mistakes  but the instructor said that’s why I was there…to learn and make mistakes on the range, not in the parking lot. I definitely want and need to take that class again!

Lemaymiami,
The private range is owned by another NRA Instructor that lives in the country (he lives on the property). I know his name is Tom, and he is a GREAT guy (good shot too!). It’s about 15 minutes north of Huntsville. I know he does rent out the range by the hour. I’ve only met him twice, and don’t have his phone number, but I can get it for you, if you want it.

A lot was definitely covered in this CCW class, I got my money’s worth for sure! The class session was 3-4 hrs, followed by a 4-5hr range session. But when you break it down, I think we only spent like 30min on each scenario, and since the class was small (3 people) it didn’t take long for us all to go thru it (a couple drills I did twice). We had time for breaks while they were setting up for the next drill and even had time at the end of the session to shoot our big wheel guns (safe queens) while they were packing up for the day.

I actually did look into Shootrite! I think it’s in Guntersville and not Scottsboro (but I could be wrong). They look like a great place, and I hope to get to them soon! They are a little out of my budget right now, (they haven’t returned my emails yet). I also looked into a place in Tennessee (Tactical Response) that looks great but out of my budget too. It’s hard for me to travel far right now, I have an elderly mother I take care of, a couple of big dogs that can’t be boarded. That’s why I was so excited to find someone so good locally! In a couple years I hope to be freed up enough and have money available to take a few classes from (among others) Massad Ayoob, Rob Pincus, and also want to visit the Firearms Academy of Seattle (they have a whole mountain for a range)! But I definitely think taking classes from different instructors is an important part of overall training~

One thing I forgot to mention is that the Basic/Personal Defense combo class that I took was a 2 or 3 day course (depending on your skill level). I did it in 3 days since it was the first gun class that I had ever taken. I did this class with my snub 38, since I had only shot wheel guns up to this point. During this class I was introduced to semi-auto's and ended up buying a Glock 23 after this class because I liked it so much. All classes since then, I've used the G23 since I'm trying to get as proficient with it as I am with the 38. I also got to shoot some AR15's and shotguns in that class too, which was a first for me.

Congratulations on the course, and I for one appreciate seeing someone excited over what a good trainer can offer :D. Best wishes in your continued study. If you ever get the chance, Tom Givens at Rangemaster in Memphis (about 4 hours away) offers some excellent training as well ( http://www.rangemaster.com/ ).

Stay Safe,

lpl
