had an accidental discharge

Here are the steps for how the Army would solve this issue:
1) Do push ups while your getting bitched at
2) Get an Article-15 (written UCMJ statement) for having an AD
3) Do more push ups
4) Go on extra duty for two weeks
5) Get demoted by one rank
6) Return to normal duty

Did you learn your lesson?

I don't know about you, but I am going to the safe and get my 1911's and clean the fp channel and verify the firing pin and spring are in good shape.

Thanks for the post.

How does a cartridge detonate without specifically striking the primer?
This is a guess, not a conclusion.
FP Inertia. A light firing pin spring and the slide crash landing on the case to drive it past the extractor and into the chamber.

The 'other' suggestions like dirty/broken/weak FP spring may also cause the same. I have DONE "empty" primed case slamming myself and it cost me a new extractor. Mine did not fire until the hammer dropped, but they might have if the FP spring didn't hold it back.

Isn't every round slamed into the chamber by the slide? I don't thing a round can ignite unless the primer is struck. JMO

Yes.
BUT this one wasn't feeding a round. the slide was released without feeding anything. It would be moving faster than when feeding a round.

If the firing pin was stuck forward, wouldn't it fire all the primers it hit. It only fired the improperly fed cartridge primers.

If it's a series 70 get one of those light weight firing pins. They shouldn't have enough mass to go off if you drop it or slam it home like you did.

And as metioned before, go for a new spring as well. 1911's are easy to work on, you should be able to replace these parts easily and clean the FP channel good too.
